Hi Shanghai

I see that Charles is arranging a chowmeet at Hi Shanghai. I searched the boards, and I found he described the restaurant last year as "Lousy food ( cold and ultra-greasy) and service".

Is this the same restaurant? Have things changed there and has the quality improved?

  1. My previous posting on the subject restaurant was over ONE AND A HALF YEAR ago!!

    All I can say is, the food I had there a couple of weeks ago was most enjoyable and the place was packed with Chinese patrons. ( Infusion of some good chefs from mainland China did wonders?! )

      Glad to hear that the restaurant is good now. My wife is always on the lookout for a good Shanghainese dim sum restaurant.

      It's funny - posts are archived forever, but the restaurant business changes rapidly. Searching the boards, recommended restaurants are closed, good restaurants go downhill, and as in this case, restaurants that were previously panned now get good reviews. How to keep up?

    2. I was there about a month ago, albeit only for lunch, and thought the food was quite good. Everything was steaming hot and tasty. I want to go back for Dinner (but unfortunately can't make Charles' chowmeet).

        Thanks for providing a second opinion! ( and a positive one too! )
        Pity you didn't join us for the Fantasy Eatery chowmeet! For the offal lover in you, we had stir-fry pigs stomach with Chinese preserved vegetable as well as deep fried pig's intestine!! Every chowhounders who attended loved the first dish! Amazing taste and texture.
        As for the upcoming Hi Shanghai meet, I'll be ordering a Shanghainese cold 'antipasti' platter with hopefully some 'marinated shredded pig's ear' in it!
        Since you miss out on two chowmeets, may be I'll arrange a Chui Chow Cuisine chowmeet down the road just for you! They have a spectacular stir-fry dish featuring 'beef bone marrow', de-boned ducks web, quail's eggs and abalone sauteed with oyster sauce. Enough to tempt you?
        St. John's roasted bone marrow was sooo good! Agree?! Pity the cholesterol was soooo high! Ha!

          Yes, I am tempted! Just reading anything that has bone marrow in it or pig's parts makes me hungry - lol. St. John's roasted bone marrow was very delicious - I could seriously eat that every day on top of that great bread with the parsley salad and sea salt, except my waistline and my heart would suffer. I actually did have the pig's ear when I went to Hi Shanghai. My Dad used to make it at home and when I saw it on the menu, I knew I had to have some! It was so yummy.

            Hi Charles,

            May I know which Chiu Chow resto you referring to? The one next to No Frills plaza? The dishes you mentioned make me drool; stir fry beef bone marrow, I havent' had it in ages. Any other unique dishes you would recommend. Thanks.
