Seeking downtown S.F. venue for friend's 40th b-day group dinner
My best friend is planning a 40th birthday dinner with about 5 other friends and is looking for a place in downtown S.F. with (1) great food (as long as it's good any cuisine would do); (2) a fun/hip or casually elegant place that would be appropriate for the occasion (nothing too fancy); (3) that is much kinder and gentler on the wallets than most of the City's usual favorites (around $20-$25/person total -- I realize this is not an easy endeavor). Running out of ideas and time! Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from L.A.!
You're right -- that budget makes it hard. Does "total" include tax and tip? What exactly are you looking for at that price? Is that price firm (i.e. everyone orders together or orders the same amount and pay as a group), or is that just a ballpark (some people will order that, some people will order more and pay for it themselves).
My first thought was that if "any cuisine" is okay, Chinatown is okay, and your group is reasonably adventurous and you're ordering together, I'd go with the Chef's Selection/Chinatown Selection at Great Eastern. For $88 you get:
minced seafood with lettuce wrap, shredded dried scallop soup, sauteed sea conch & scallops with yellow chives, fresh dungeness crab with xo sauce, sauteed soft bean cake & Chinese mushrooms with tender greens, steamed fish, dessert & fresh fruit.
My other thought was Town's End, which has a $21.95 prix fixe that unlike other places isn't limited by either time or choice (any appetizer/soup/salad, any entree, any dessert). Of course, by the time you add a beverage, tax, tip, etc. you're over $25.
