I SAW A TASTE OF HOME LISTED IN THE "BEST OF LONG ISLAND" SURVEY FOR 2009. IT WAS LISTED IN A FEW CATEGORIES -BEST SOUP, BEST BAKERY. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE? IS IT WORTH A TRY ?
THANKS

Eminently skippable typical LI bakery. If this is the "Best of LI", we's in deep doo-doo, my friend!

Any hounds care to point us towards some high-end carbs?

BTW, Love the Long Island Press freebie paper in general but....Survey Sux! Just for laughs, check out some of the "Best Restaurant" winners. Frightening.

thanks, I thought it probably was quite mediocre as the Bakery in Plainview is on the list and since that is in my neighborhood I know it is nothing special.

There is a Bakery in Alberston too, and although many things are not anything to write home about, they have some things that are classic, light the Philly fluff and the brownie pie. Their danish are pretty good too. I guess it's a matter of taste.

I have to agree that the LIP's "Best of..." surveys are laughable--though I think this is more a testament to the cluelessness of the readers than any sneaky doings by the staff.

Examples are Lemonleaf grill in Carle Place and Hicksville as best Thai (as someone on Chow once said, Lemonleaf is the Denny's of Thai. Dunkin' Donuts for best coffee. Oh, please.

That said, I've had one thing from Taste of Home, bought not at the place itself but from the East Meadow Farmer's Market (they had a stand) and that apple pie was pretty good.

The Long Island Press is known for reviewing or singling out businesses that advertise with them. That bakery is nothing special.

Good call Scott. Now I am really starting to wonder about Chow postings. This is something the chowhound police should investigate.

If you're looking for an outstanding bakery, try Buttercooky bakery in floral park. Their fruit salad cake is to die for. They're a bit pricey but worth every cent. They are at 217 Jericho turnpike.

There's a branch in Manhasset too:

                Butter Cooky Bakery
                (516) 627-1600
140 Plandome Rd, Manhasset, NY 11030

Very reliable opperation, with excellent all-butter pastries, but both spots are kind of a hike for us South shore slugs.

My favorite:Chocolate Glazed Hazelnut Mousse Cake-fresh creamy and real-nothing phoney! Don't know of any other bakery as consistantly good, but willing to drop my fork if someone wants to enlighten me.

Had friends over for dinner and they brought a blueberry pie from Taste Of Home. It was inedible. The filling was so hard that it was difficult to cut the pie. Nuff said
