Boston Cream Pie Help

I am making several cakes for a friend's birthday dinner next week, and he mentioned to me that Boston Creme Pie is his favorite cake. I've never made one so I looked in The Best Recipe, which had one using sponge cake. Is that what it's made with? I always thought that it was a finer crumbed cake than sponge, but I have to admit that I can't remember when I last had a Boston Creme Pie. Does anyone make this, and/or does anyone know of a particularly good recipe?

FYI - I made the cake on the cover of the Dorrie Greenspan book, Baking From My Home to Yours for my son's birthday party. It is incredible -- sort of a refined, more delicious version of a devil dog! This will be the second cake I make for this party, and I am thinking of a coconut cake with lime curd filling for the third...

  1. I'm originally from Boston, and this picture and article look just like the Boston Cream Pie I had as a kid. The cake layers were sponge, but had some substance; and the frosting was definitely a thick glaze. Mmmmm, I can almost taste it now!
