Birthday dinner in Napa or Sonoma
East coast girl will celebrate a BIG birthday and would like the meal of a life time. Going to Ubuntu the day before. Thinking about French Laundry or Terra. Will book hotel after I figure out restaurant choice so open to anywhere in Napa or Sonoma counties. Would like a more unique experience as opposed to a restaurant I can find in NY. Any suggestions??
Also I am a Pinot fan. My favorite right now is Sea Smoke from Santa Barbara. Any suggetions on wineries to visit would be appreciated.
You must reserve at TFL exactly two months ahead of time.
I'd also consider Cyrus in Healdsburg.
Terra is my regular favorite overall in Napa Valley, but not the lollapalooza event that TFL or Cyrus will be.
If you like Sea Smoke, you like Pinot Noir made in an oaky Syrah style, and not in a
true Pinot Noir style. There are others made like this, and I know for certain that the topic
has come up several times on the Wine Board, so you could simply search that board for
Sea Smoke. Or you could post a new thread there, something along the lines of "If I like Sea Smoke Pinot Noir, then what Northern California Pinot Noirs will I like?" That style of inky Pinot is more common in the Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez area than Russian River Valley, where
you'll find a somewhat more restrained ("true-to-form") style of Pinot Noir.
And BTW, if you decide to dine at Cyrus in Healdsburg, and also stay there, that's very close to the Russian River Valley. That would be my recommendation for you.
Happy "Big" Birthday,
re: maria lorraine
Thanks much!! I have booked Cyrus and will report back. Also I have done some reading about No. California pinots and the description of Dehlinger caught my eye. Do you know it? I tend to like Caneros and Russian river pinots as well but I have not kept up with the producers. Looking forward to my trip. Thanks again.. Judith
I think if you like a bigger style of Pinot, you will be happy with Dehlinger. You might also try their Syrah. Another good bet might be Scherrer, I like his Zinfandel as well. He used to work at Dehlinger.
Hope you are planning to spend the night in Healdsburg, I wouldn't want to drive back to the Napa Valley after a dinner at Cyrus. If you do, consider having breakfast at the Downtown Bakery (right on the plaza). Happy B-day!
