I have, very reluctantly, been shopping for meat at Citarella. I am truly sad about the demise of Jefferson. I was a faithful, satisfied shopper for over 30 years.
I think that adding to my sadness about the closing is the actual way it happened. Had it been the Montauro's decision to sell and pack it in, it would have been easier. To think that it closed because it was not longer viable makes me sad.

I do think the meat at Citarella is very good. Other good local options are Ottomanelli on Bleecker, and Florence Meat Market on Jones Street. There is also a nice butcher across from Joe's Dairy just south of Houston, but I don't remember the name.
