RUB BBQ
Will be likely going to RUB while in town in Dec. with a party of four. I realise opinion is divided on NYC BBQ, but this place is close to out hotel and convenient as a first night pre-theatre.
Couple of questions:
Whats good here?
Also, I understand there are no reservations. Are we fairly good for getting a table right away there on a Wednesday at say 5.30pm?
Cheers
I love the wings, burnt ends, and onion strings. You should have no problem getting a table right away at 5:30pm on a Wednesday.

I will second the burnt ends. As much as I love the onion strings they are a gut buster and 1 order can easily be shared by 2 people. The beans are great as well.

Rub was great when it opened, better than it is now. Having said that, I guess it is hit or miss. I have had very good dinners there in the past year and a few that were quite bad (fatty and tepid meat with no interesting texture and not enough smoke).
I think when they are on the pulled pork is quite nice. I have had bad luck with the ribs. I also like the link sausages.

I agree you should have no trouble getting a seat at 5:30pm on a Wed. This is the best time to go if you don't want to wait. NYers eat late even on week nights so anytime earlier than 6:30/7PM should be okay. I won't recommend anything as I've tried it three times with a friend, varying the menu choices each time, and totally agree with NYJewboy re the quality on their off days. We could not have provided a more accurate description of our meal experiences there. But I hope you have a great meal there as it sounds like it is possible based on some of the reviews on this board.

Thanks one and all. Great to know we should be ok for 5.30's and some idea of what to try.
Hopefully we will catch it on a good night. Will report back.
