New Jersey Pork Roll in San Diego

Captain Jack Nov 12, 2008 11:42 AM

I found a new restaurant in Pacific Beach named Pop's Jersey Style Cheese Steaks. I ate there yesterday and the food was great. The most interesting aspect for hounds is that Pop imports Taylor Brand pork roll from Trenton, NJ (also known as Taylor Ham in North Jersey). This unusual ground pork lactose fermented sausage product is slightly smokey, tangy sour, and subtly sweet all at the same time. Pop's makes a sandwich with it where the pork roll is thinly sliced, sauted on a griddle, and piled on a grilled Solunto's roll with deli mustard mayonnaise, sliced tomatoes, and shredded letuce. This sammy is off the hook and something every hound should try IMHO.

Does anyone know of other establishments in SD serving pork roll?

Cheers

I *think* that Georgino's Deli in Golden Hill (formerly Gotham City Pizza) has Taylor Ham. The owner is from New Jersey, and I am pretty sure I have seen that item on the menu.

You can buy Taylor Pork Roll at Major Market on Centre City Parkway in Escondido. They have it in the deli case and slice it to order. I fry it up until well browned then make a sandwich on white toast with catsup. I remember it from my childhood in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

Oh. My. God. Taylor ham can be found in San Diego???? My parents are from New Jersey and every time they go back, they have to get their hands on the Taylor ham. Grilled up and put on wheat bread with some mustard. . .nothing better.

You can also buy Taylor Pork Roll at Iowa Meat Farms. We fry it up and serve it with eggs for breakfast, or on a roll with melted cheese. I always thought I enjoyed it so much because of the nostalgia- it is interesting to hear from someone trying it for the first time as an adult.

Up here in the LA area, I've seen it at Bristol Farms markets. Got any of those down there?

Yes, one in the North University / UTC / faux La Jolla part of town (across from the UTC mall in the Costa Verde Center).

Taylor Pork Roll sandwich is a definite "boardwalk" food here in NJ... IMO! On a Kaiser roll, ketchup & relish, American cheese also an option.
