Momofuku Ssam tonight—what to order?

maggiej Nov 12, 2008 07:25 AM

Has anyone been recently? How many dishes should two people order? What should they be? We've been to noodle bar and had the pork buns, so I'm not sure they're absolutely required.

Brussels Sprouts? Rice Cakes? Duck?

Was there this past Friday and it was fantastic as usual. The apple kimchi with pork jowl knocked my socks off as did the guinea hen pate with pickled chanterelles. Also try the branzino (yum!) and the berkshire pork shoulder. Have fun!

4-6 dishes. Fewer if you lean towards the right side of the menu. More if you are getting more from the left side. Meat (fish, duck, etc.) tend to be the size of main entrees.

Right now my preferred order for two people is:
      Steamed buns
      Benton's country ham
      Pumpkin chawan mushi
Fried brussels sprouts with mint and chili
Honeycrisp apple kimchi with Burgers' jowl and maple labne
Duck with cheddar, spaetzle, pear and duck jus
Pear sorbet with gorgonzola dulce and pumpkin ganache

The rice cakes are good but huge and very filling. It's a heavy dish, with lots of sauage and carbs, especially since they started frying the rice cakes (they're crisp a little on the outside). They also upped the spiciness a little while back. We could hardly finish them a few weeks ago, but that was mainly because we ordered a bunch of other things.

When it comes to Momofuku, you have to follow kathryn's advice! :D

Benton's ham and the brussels sprouts (when available) are must-have for me at Ssam Bar. In fact I love the Benton's ham so much that I ordered the ham and the bacon online to enjoy at home!
I am really tempted to order the jowl from Burgers' Smokehouse...

Anyway, I also like their lamb belly, but they only have it at lunch now. Too bad!

What can I say, but I know the menu like the back of my own hand (sadly). The fried brussels sprouts are probably one of the few things I enjoy about colder weather!

            Hi Kathryn,

Any insider info as in when the milk bar will open? I am looking forward to trying everything that comes with deep fried poached egg! :D

I'm actually going to Ssam tomorrow night, and will inquire, or at least peek through the planks if they let me! It looked nearly ready to go this past Sunday and I heard they already had a private party in the space.

Thanks, everyone! We had a great meal. Kathryn, you're right—those rice cakes were FILLING! Delicious, though. And the brussels sprouts and benton ham were lovely.

I heard that the soft opening for Milk Bar will be on Friday so if you are a regular you might get a taste!

Bread with Seasalt Goat Butter - to die for. I've been thinking about it for the months since.

I actually bought the goat butter (St. Helena) at Murray's cheese.
