Chippy's on Queen - is it me or is it getting better?

2 cents Nov 11, 2008 04:59 PM

I've been to Chippy's a few times since it opened up, and while I wanted to love it, I always found the fish (and the chips) esp. greasy, soggy, and well, not that tasty. Today I grabbed some cod to go, and it was surprisingly good. The batter was super crispy, the portion size was big, and the fish was actually kind of delicious.

I was on Queen West the other day and it looked to me like Chippy's was closed and papered over. Same Chippy's? (Same block as TYPE Books and The Spice Trader?)

Walked by yesterday - closed for good. I didn't bother reading the entire note left on the door because it's been so long since the food there was worth eating. I used to love taking a picnic over to the park back in the day!

Out of curiosity, what made you think they were closed for good? They are closed for renovations to the end of February, reopening March 1st.

I also heard they are renovating it....to the nines!

But why go there when you have the far superior "The One That Got Away" ?

Aren't there other branches in the West end?

They used to have a location in the Annex, but that closed and got replaced by a poutine place. I think at one point they were looking to open another location but had not settled on where. The one at Queen West is the only location that I'm aware of now.

Maybe because they prefer burn't french fries, over cooked fish, and a manager that when you notify them of burn't the fries, they basically tell you to go F yourself. The manager told me I had been eating at mcdonalds for too many years and this is how real french fries are. Clearly I hit a nerve and they are proud of their burnt soggy fries.

My reading comprehension must not have been the best on Saturday - I skimmed the note and my take-away was that it was closed! I must have skipped some of the important words. Oops!
