Christmas in Manhattan -- Xmas day and other suggestions?

Two SF Chowhounds will be in NYC from the 23 to the 26th and are looking for recommendations for Christmas day, as well as Chrismas eve, and Friday the 26th. Would be interested in knowledge of special menus (or good places that are open on Xmas), and suggestions for relatively new (last 2 years) not to be missed places. I get to NYC annually, but have not had a chance to check on any new places such as Gordon Ramsay, etc.

Thanks in advance!

  1. On XMAS day you have to go for Chinese, its an NYC tradition.

    1. Mamoun's Falafel is always open on Xmas (as are most Middle Eastern places)
Of course New York hotel restaurants are always festive.

If you want to spend the day in an area where almost ALL of the shops are open, head to the Jewish section of Flatbush, Brookklyn (Avenue J Subway Stop), everything's open!!!

Mabat Israeli Grill is worth a visit - try their awesome Yemenite Soup and Kebabs! And then head to Chiffon Bakery for a delicious jelly doughnut.

I wouldn't count on any of the Jewish places being open this year, as Christmas falls on the Sabbath, and most of these places will be closed.

      2. Marseille and Nice Matin are both always open on Christmas day, and offer a very reasonable prix-fixe with many choices. Delicious food and great atmosphere. Les Halles is usually open, too, and not bad, but I prefer the others. I've heard that Brasserie is also open, but I have never eaten there. A friend went last year and enjoyed it. The vast majority of restaurants are closed Christmas day but most are open Christmas eve. You should check Opentable to see which are open and then come back here with some specific ones that interest you.

Thanks all for your suggestions -- we'll check it out, and report back on our trip. Thanks!

p.s. although Mamoun's is awesome, it will bring back memories of grad school at NYU, so I think we'll skip it on xmas, but thanks for the tip!

I suggest you get a drink at Rolfs on third avenue- its a german place - the food is mediocre - but it is decorated to make you feel like you are dining in a xmas tree :)

The food is less than mediocre but the beers are great.

Cibo at 41st and 2nd Ave is open. They've got a nice Xmas menu. Find them at

You could go to Sarge's Deli, on 3rd Av., b/t 36th & 37th Sts. It's open 24/7, and that includes Christmas Day. Nothing like starting the day off with a delicious pastrami sandwich, but if you prefer breakfast foods and/or appetizing, they've got plenty of those.

Not that I can remember. I live in the East Village, and it's pretty dead here on Christmas. It gets lively when you cross Delancey. I like to go for dim sum on Christmas, but be warned that mobs of other people have the same idea. Last year, there was a tremendous line outside of Dim Sum Go Go, so I went to Chatham Restaurant across the street and had above-average dim sum. I may very well go there again.
