Where can I find an affordable suckling pig?

  • 8

I'm looking to to buy one to prepare on Sunday. I've been to a couple places in Manhattan, but they are charging near $7 a pound. Anyone know where I can get a better deal? Thanks!

  1. Someone asked the same question last year - perhaps the answer(s) will be more or less the same:

As an update to that post, Muncan Food was also willing to get me one for $4/lb. I would go with them because pork is what Muncan does. They will also roast it for you if you want for $25.

If you are not familiar with Muncan, here's an intro:

You might be able to find it for cheaper (I've seen it for about $2/lb in Pennsylvania), but I wouldn't know where in NYC. Maybe a wholesale meat market in The Bronx?

Cool. Please report back on how it turns out.

            How was that pig?
            How'd you cook it?

It was AWESOME! The night before, I rubbed it inside and out with a paste I made from garlic, rosemary, oregano and olive oil. I then stuffed the cavity with more garlic and herbs plus a lemon, lime and an orange. The following day I put it in a 400 degree oven for a little under an hour, then dropped the temp to 275 and let it cook for about 4 more hours. Needless to say, my guests were very impressed.

I'm glad it turned out well.

I didn't end up getting one last year, but I'm thinking about cooking one next week. Could you answer some more questions for me?

*What size pig did you get? Would this size pig fit on a half-sheet pan?
*How many folks did it feed?
*How meaty is a suckling pig? Satisfyingly meaty or too bony?

                Thanks!

      2. Los Paisanos on Smith Street brags that it does whole pigs. No idea what it costs.
