songs referencing food: your playlist

I want to compile one starting now, can't immediately find a thread on this, though I'd be surprised if there hasn't been one at some point...

Anyway, some old favorites off the top of my head:

"She Don't Use Jelly," Flaming Lips
"Starfish and Coffee," Prince
"Punky's Dilemma," Simon & Garfunkel ("wish I was a Kellogg's cornflake"...)
"Eggs and Sausage," Tom Waits
"Toast and Jelly," Poi Dog Pondering

ONE EXCEPTION: No "Cherry Pie"!

                    1. Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmy Buffett

                      1. re: rockycat

In that case we also need to include "Timothy" by the Buoys.

I Eat Cannibals—another one to take me back! Dang! I think a lot of us must have hung out in the same circles in our respective high schools.

                      2. Here is a web page with a rather extensive list of food songs.

                        http://www.mixedup.com/foodsongs.htm

                        1. I made this list for a previous thread, but I have added a few. Please excuse duplications:

‘I Will Play For Gumbo’ by Jimmy Buffett

At the risk of immodesty, allow my to offer my own songs:

                          1. re: Fydeaux

Dang! That's quite a list. Um, Martin Mull? The comedian?

                            1. re: tatamagouche

Yep, that Martin Mull. Although 'comedian' doesnt nearly cover it. Among other things, he is a great song writer and a superb guitarist although he only occasionally steps out to solo on any of his records.

                            2. re: Fydeaux

OMG!!! You've actually heard of the Rev. Billy! I saw him on my first date with my husband - and we still got married.

                              1. re: rockycat

If I have a spiritual leader, Rev Billy C Wirtz is it, and the First House of Polyester Worship is my sancuary!

Your husband must be one impressive fellow if you married him after his taking you to see Rev Billy on a first date! My compliments!

                              2. re: Fydeaux

Fydeaux, great list but I know you know almost *none* of those songs are about food
                                : )

One of my favorites is Save The Bones For Henry Jones (Cause Henry Don't Eat No Meat)
as sung by Johnny Mercer and Nat King Cole
And it really really is about food

                                We’re gonna have a supper
We’ll eat some food that’s rare
And at the head of the table
                                We’ll place brother Henry’s chair
Invite all the local big dogs
We’ll laugh and talk and eat
But we’ll save the bones for Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat

                                Today I’ll go to market
                                Buy up a lotta fish
Well, that will thrill brother Henry
‘Cause fish is his special dish
Get a large can of molasses
                                Have something really sweet
But we’ll save the bones for Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat

                                Henry is not a drinker
                                He rarely takes a nip
                                He don’t need a napkin
‘Cause the things he eats don’t drip – blip!
One day we had a banquet
                                It really was a bake
They started off with short ribs
                                Then finished off with steak
But when the feast was over
Brother Henry just kept his seat
And we served the bones to Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat

                                Our banquet was most proper
                                Right down to demitasse
From soup to lox and bagels
And pheasant under glass – class!
We thought the chops were mellow
He said his chops were beat – reet!
We served the bones to Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat
                                He’s an egg man
                                Henry don’t eat no meat
                                He loves a pullet
                                Henry don’t eat no meat
                                A vegetarian
                                Henry?
                                Coming mother!
                                Soup’s on

                              3. "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow immediately comes to mind although I don't think they're the original artists.

                                1. re: southernitalian

The Strangeloves, around 1966 or 67, I think.

                                2. ' 30000 Pounds of Bananas' - Harry Chapin
                                  'My Boy Lollipop' -Millie Small
                                  'I'm Busted' -Ray Charles

and the melodic 'Verdi Cries' -10,000 Maniacs

                                  1. re: Veggo

I didn't even remember that "Verdi Cries" referenced food, but so it does.

I just remembered an 80s band called The Judys had a song about milk (called "Milk") and another one called "Guyana Punch," which counts I guess...Does "Meat Is Murder" (The Smiths) count?

Jesus & Mary Chain, "Just Like Honey"
Suzanne Vega, "Tom's Diner," sort of
                                    White Stripes, "Little Cream Soda"

                                    1. re: tatamagouche

I had the privilege of seeing Natalie Merchant in concert at Carnegie Hall at a Tibetian benefit, and watching/hearing her perform 'Verdi Cries' just leaves you numb.

                                  2. K’naan – Wash it Down

Blondie – Eat to the Beat

                                    Snow Patrol – Chocolate

Ice Cream – New Young Pony Club

                                    1. Hamburger Hell by Todd Rundgren

                                      1. I've always been partial to "Cups & Cakes" (by the Themesmen...who later changed their name to Spinal Tap)

"Popcorn Love" and "Candy Girl" by New Edition
"Feed Me Seymore" Little Shop of Horrors soundtrack

                                        1. re: MrsT

And there's "Sugar, Sugar" by The Archies

                                          1. re: rockycat

and the execrable "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro.

The only saving grace for that piece of dreck is that it led to a great sight gag on The Simpsons: An apiary called "Goldsboro's Honey."

                                          2. Funny nobody mentioned any Weird Al. He has a whole album (yes I still call them albums) about food.

"How Can I Live Without You?" also by Cracker: : "You can still come and bring me coffee in the morning/You can still come and make me chicken fried steak..."

Ah well, speaking of the Pixies, there's also "I Been Tired" and "breasts like a cluster of grapes"—which until now, frankly, I always thought was "dress like a cluster of grapes." I'm not sure what to make of the actual simile.

And as for Cracker, "cigarettes...& carrot juice" in "Big Dipper"; and as for their predecessors Camper van Beethoven, "All Her Favorite Fruit": "She serves him mashed potatoes, and she serves him peppered steak...with corn..." Boy, they were big on being fed by their women.

And still speaking of 80s bands—which, admittedly, is mostly what I do—there was a band from Austin, I believe, with a lead singer who looked a lot like Laura Dern. They had a song called "Wine." The chorus was basically "Wine! Wine! Wine, wine, wine wine, wine!"

I can't remember their name. Can anyone?

To update myself I'll point to The Decemberists' "Sons and Daughters'—"We'll fill our mouths with cinnamon..."

Speaking of which, back when kids had to learn a new dance every week or be considered tragically uncool, there was a song called "Cinnamon Cinder (It's a Very Nice Dance)," by The Pastel Six. Googling just disclosed that the Cinnamon Cinder was a chain of alcohol-free teen nightclubs in the LA area owned by none other than then-DJ Bob "Newlywed Game" Eubanks. The Pastel Six was the house band. Who knew? Well, anyone who was at least 12 yrs old in 1963, which did not include me. 8>D

Or just "Black Coffee", originally sung by Billy Holliday, and covered by the Pointer Sisters. Great torch song.

Kinda sorta on topic: Squeeze refers to alcohol consumption in one way or another in pretty much every song from their first four albums.

Since 2 songs by the B-52s have been listed, might as well go for the trifecta with "Quiche Lorraine" even though its about a poodle.

                                                          2. Tom Waits...

The intro to "Eggs and Sausage" is one of the best food lines out there. ("Veal cutlet gets up off the plate, walks down to end of the counter and beat the shit out of my cup of coffee. I guess the coffee just wasn't strong enough to defend itself.")

But "Ice Cream Man" has to be my favorite tune that's (allegedly) about food.

                                                                        2. I always loved the quirky and obscure "Toast" by Streetband (featuring Paul Young on vocals). You can google it for some YouTube performances. Here's an excerpt from the lyrics:

"Well, then I started getting older,
I hated this, I hated that,
                                                                          Expensive steak was ludicrous
And cafés couldn't cater for the finer things in life:
The upper crust was not for me,
                                                                          I could tell that.
                                                                          So I'd go back home,
                                                                          Switch the kitchen light on,
                                                                          Put the grill on,
                                                                          Slip a slice under

                                                                          And have toast,
                                                                          A little piece of toast.

'Cos there's so much to choose from.
                                                                          There's brown bread, white bread,
                                                                          All sorts of wholemeal bread;
                                                                          It comes in funny packages
                                                                          With writing on the side,

                                                                          It doesn't really matter.

Oh no, it all goes with toast,
