songs referencing food: your playlist
I want to compile one starting now, can't immediately find a thread on this, though I'd be surprised if there hasn't been one at some point...
Anyway, some old favorites off the top of my head:
"She Don't Use Jelly," Flaming Lips
"Starfish and Coffee," Prince
"Punky's Dilemma," Simon & Garfunkel ("wish I was a Kellogg's cornflake"...)
"Eggs and Sausage," Tom Waits
"Toast and Jelly," Poi Dog Pondering
ONE EXCEPTION: No "Cherry Pie"!

Fydeaux, great list but I know you know almost *none* of those songs are about food
: )
One of my favorites is Save The Bones For Henry Jones (Cause Henry Don't Eat No Meat)
as sung by Johnny Mercer and Nat King Cole
And it really really is about food
We’re gonna have a supper
We’ll eat some food that’s rare
And at the head of the table
We’ll place brother Henry’s chair
Invite all the local big dogs
We’ll laugh and talk and eat
But we’ll save the bones for Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat
Today I’ll go to market
Buy up a lotta fish
Well, that will thrill brother Henry
‘Cause fish is his special dish
Get a large can of molasses
Have something really sweet
But we’ll save the bones for Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat
Henry is not a drinker
He rarely takes a nip
He don’t need a napkin
‘Cause the things he eats don’t drip – blip!
One day we had a banquet
It really was a bake
They started off with short ribs
Then finished off with steak
But when the feast was over
Brother Henry just kept his seat
And we served the bones to Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat
Our banquet was most proper
Right down to demitasse
From soup to lox and bagels
And pheasant under glass – class!
We thought the chops were mellow
He said his chops were beat – reet!
We served the bones to Henry Jones
‘Cause Henry don’t eat no meat
He’s an egg man
Henry don’t eat no meat
He loves a pullet
Henry don’t eat no meat
A vegetarian
Henry?
Coming mother!
Soup’s on

I didn't even remember that "Verdi Cries" referenced food, but so it does.

"Sweet Potato" by Cracker: "Be my sweet potato, be my honey lamb..."
"How Can I Live Without You?" also by Cracker: : "You can still come and bring me coffee in the morning/You can still come and make me chicken fried steak..."
"Thunder on the Mountain" by Bob Dylan: "I had the pork chops, she had the pie..."
"I Got a Gig" by Hayes Carl: "Burnt Fried Chicken and Lone Star beer..."
Ah well, speaking of the Pixies, there's also "I Been Tired" and "breasts like a cluster of grapes"—which until now, frankly, I always thought was "dress like a cluster of grapes." I'm not sure what to make of the actual simile.
And as for Cracker, "cigarettes...& carrot juice" in "Big Dipper"; and as for their predecessors Camper van Beethoven, "All Her Favorite Fruit": "She serves him mashed potatoes, and she serves him peppered steak...with corn..." Boy, they were big on being fed by their women.
And still speaking of 80s bands—which, admittedly, is mostly what I do—there was a band from Austin, I believe, with a lead singer who looked a lot like Laura Dern. They had a song called "Wine." The chorus was basically "Wine! Wine! Wine, wine, wine wine, wine!"
I can't remember their name. Can anyone?
To update myself I'll point to The Decemberists' "Sons and Daughters'—"We'll fill our mouths with cinnamon..."

Speaking of which, back when kids had to learn a new dance every week or be considered tragically uncool, there was a song called "Cinnamon Cinder (It's a Very Nice Dance)," by The Pastel Six. Googling just disclosed that the Cinnamon Cinder was a chain of alcohol-free teen nightclubs in the LA area owned by none other than then-DJ Bob "Newlywed Game" Eubanks. The Pastel Six was the house band. Who knew? Well, anyone who was at least 12 yrs old in 1963, which did not include me. 8>D

Tom Waits...
The intro to "Eggs and Sausage" is one of the best food lines out there. ("Veal cutlet gets up off the plate, walks down to end of the counter and beat the shit out of my cup of coffee. I guess the coffee just wasn't strong enough to defend itself.")
But "Ice Cream Man" has to be my favorite tune that's (allegedly) about food.

Detroit/Ann Arbor favorite: Angelo's by Dick Siegel:
"Oh, what a wonderful thing to do:
Eggs over easy, hash browns, and you.
We'll go to Angelo's, 'cause the place really hops.
We'll go to Angelo's, where the service is tops.
We'll go to Angelo's. We'll be lickin' our chops.
Mama, we'll pull out the stops. Bop!
When we leave that place, we'll be laughin' out loud,
Smilin' so hard, we'll draw a crowd.
They'll say, "What's up, man?" and we'll just have to boast
About the eggs over easy, hash browns, and toast.... "

I always loved the quirky and obscure "Toast" by Streetband (featuring Paul Young on vocals). You can google it for some YouTube performances. Here's an excerpt from the lyrics:
"Well, then I started getting older,
I hated this, I hated that,
Expensive steak was ludicrous
And cafés couldn't cater for the finer things in life:
The upper crust was not for me,
I could tell that.
So I'd go back home,
Switch the kitchen light on,
Put the grill on,
Slip a slice under
And have toast,
A little piece of toast.
'Cos there's so much to choose from.
There's brown bread, white bread,
All sorts of wholemeal bread;
It comes in funny packages
With writing on the side,
But it doesn't matter which one you have
'Cos when you cut the crusts off,
Have it with marmalade
Or butter, cheese, tomatoes, beans,
Banana
Or chocolate if you're strange,
It doesn't really matter.
Oh no, it all goes with toast,
Just toast."
And I'm surprised no one has mentioned "Love Potion #9"!

Not the same thing at all! Just ask Keith Morris.
But if we're going punk, the Descendents' Der Weinerschnitzel, or any of that band's impassioned odes to the Bonus Cup: essentially equal quantities of instant coffee, boiling water and sugar mixed together and shotgunned. Mmmmm, bonus cup.

I hope to not repeat anyone's lists here, but there is a fine line between inspiration and plagiarism. So here's my list (by no means complete, and some have more to do with drinks than food):
-Red Red Wine (UB40)
-Champagne Supernova (Oasis)
-Common People [references rum and cola, plus the supermarket] (Pulp)
-Miss American Pie [ref's drinks as well] (Don McLean)
-Day-O, aka the banana boat song (Harry Belafonte)
-Closing Time (Leonard Cohen, video filmed at the legendary Matador club)
-Somebody Put Something In My Drink [Tanqueray + Tonic, yum] (the Ramones)
-Thank U [refs alcohol and tea] (Dido)
-Brown Sugar (Rolling Stones)
-I Want Candy [This song is the bane of my existence. I've been trying to get people to stop calling me Candy for 25 years]
-Lost in the Supermarket (the Clash)
-Strange Fruit (Billie Holiday) [yes, I know it's a euphanism, but belongs on the list.
-That's Amore (Tony Bennett?)
-Cinnamon Girl (Neil Young)
And of course there has to be one, amazingly appropriate yet overlooked song...
2 Pints of Lager {and a Packet of Crisps Please} (Splodgienessabounds). This was the theme song for a BBC comedy of the same name, and so perfectly sums up the culinary oddity that is Britain. Cheers.

The Super Supper March by John Hamblin
Sorry, just can't resist posting the lyrics
Hungry, hungry I am hungry
Table, table here I come
I could eat a goose-moose burger
Fifteen pickles and a purple plum
I could eat three bowls of goulash
Half a pound of wuzzled wheat
I could eat a peck of poobers
Then I'd really get to work and eat
Oysters, noodles, strawberry stroodles
French fries, fish hash, one red beet
Lamb chops, wham chops
Huckleberry mish mash
Oh, the things that I could eat
Doughnuts, dump-a-lings
Blueberry bump-a-lings
Chocolate mush-mash, super sweet
Clam stew, ham stew,
Water melon wush wush
Oh, the stuff that I could eat
Deep dish rhubarb, upside-down cake
I could eat a frittered flum
Hungry, hungry, I am starving
Table, table, here I come

Ok - I'm rather late to join this discussion, but so it goes.... In any case, while the majority of the posts have been dedicated to English language songs from the USA, UK, and such, I thought that I would mention that there are an infinite amount of songs from the Portuguese (Lusophone) speaking countries such as Brazilian Samba and MPB, Angolan Semba, Cape Verdean Morna and Funana, and Portugese Fado that reference food; particularly since they deal with everyday life within the lyrics.
Some artists and lyrcists from Brazil include Aldir Blanc & João Bosco; Moacyr Luz; João Nogueira; Paulo César Pinheiro; Chico Buarque; Carlinhos Vergueiro; and many others.
From Portugal: Carlos do Carmo and many other fadistas embrace cuisine and wine in their lyrics.
From Angola and Cape Verde, there are many, yet the references to fish, beer, and many other regional dishes are ubiquitous throughout the various genres of semba (Angola) and morna (Cape Verde).
Also, one neglected mention on an English language song - although Squeeze has been mentioned - is from Glenn Tilbrook's debut album - <The Incomplete Glenn Tilbrook.> The last track, "Sunday Breakfast Treat," is a song about making Welsh Rarebit! Truly a Sunday Treat!
Another personal favorite is from Martin Sexton called"Diner." This can be found on his 1996 album, <Black Sheep.> This song makes me hungry for a burger and fries whenever I hear it!
Also, the brilliant Scottish band Del Amitri has multiple references to food and drink in their lyrics!
Cheers and Saúde!

A few of these have already been mentioned, but the thread was so long I just couldn't be sure of all of them. Plus, some of mine are bound to be obscure to many, so...
Rad Gumbo, Hamburger Midnight, Tripe Face Boogie - Little Feat
Hot Tamale Baby - Clifton Chenier (used in an antacid commercial a few years ago, and covered by almost every Louisiana musical act.)
Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmy Buffett
Couchon de Lait (suckling pig) - Beausoleil
Down at the Twist and Shout - Mary-Chapin Carpenter ("they got a alligator stew and a crawfish pie...")
Too Much - Guy Clark ("...Too much gravy'll make you fat...Too much coffee'll race your heart tick...Too much onion'll make you weepy...Too much Mexican food'll fill you...")
Butter (a paean to food delights remembered), Take Me Out to Eat ("...They got squid and leaks; I see those grouper cheeks, How about that garlic veal? Can't we put aside our politics for just one meal…"), Good Thing He Can't Read My Mind ("I am eating sushi, when I do not like sushi, but he loves sushi and I love him"), Junk Food (more a rap than a song) - Four Bitchin' Babes
Filé Gumbo, Crawfish (this one's a favorite at the bars for the lyric "Squeeze the tail and suck the head"), Dancin' at Double D's ("...they always got some boudin and some hot filé...), Le Chanson des Mardi Gras (about the gumbo ride on Mardi Gras day) - Zachary Richard
Sur Le Courtableau (about a sort of seafood boil, Cajun style), Zarico est pas salé (literally, the snap beans (les haricots) aren't salty, meaning they're too poor to cook 'em with pork) later corrupted to Zydeco est pas salé - Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys
And one oddity I'm pretty sure hasn't been in the list yet:
Yeah, Toast! - Heywood Banks :D
(I get up in the morning about 6 AM

take a piece of bread put it in the slot

First, I've gotta say: songs about sex and food are great on this list. Songs, as above, about genocide (Billie Holiday's STRANGE FRUIT) or genital mutilation (Tori Amos' CORNFLAKE GIRL) are repugnant additions to a playlist about food. Did I say repugnant? I meant heinous. Otherwise there are some fantastic lists in this thread.
That said, here are my additions (there might be repeats from other lists):

Fun thread: Here's my contribution. I'm surprised there's been no mention of any of Dean Wareham's bands.
I listen to Luna and Galaxie 500 a lot, but especially when I'm cooking and Dean Wareham (who fronted both bands) has many food related songs or lyrics, including:
Black Champagne
Swedish Fish
Orange Peel
Egg Nog
Lyric from Renee is Crying:
"Salt and Pepper Squid
Singapore noodles
I could look at your face
For oodles and oodles"
From Cindy Tastes of Barbecue:
"Your purple mouth says snicker smack
I'm turning round I'm turning back
Cindy tastes of barbecue
Cindy tastes like cream
I made a promise to the hills"
As Dean and Britta a duet featuring him and former Luna member Britta Phillips:
Ginger Snaps
And from Galaxie 500:
Lyric from Strange:
"I went along down to the drugstore
I went out back and took a Coke
I stood in line and ate my Twinkies
I stood in line, I had to wait"
Galaxie 500 also covered Cheese and Onions
I'm sure there are others too, but I can't recall them from the top of my head. Other food music I like or can think of:
Jesus and Mary Chain: (of course they often aren't literally singing about food)
Some Candy Talking
Just Like Honey
Others:
Lambchop - Smuckers
Stereolab - Emperor tomato Ketchup
Stereloab - Margarine Rock
Nick Drake - Milk and Honey
Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon
Dream Syndicate - Days of Wine and Roses
Velvet Underground - Candy Says
Yo La Tengo - Crispy Duck
Yo La Tengo - Return to Hot Chicken
Beat Happening - Indian Summer lyrics have several references to food:
Breakfast in cemetery
Boy tasting wild cherry
Touch girl, apple blossom
Just a boy playing possum
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
And go our separate ways
What is that cheerful sound?
Rain falling on the ground
We'll wear a jolly crown
Buckle up, we're wayward bound
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
And go our separate ways
Motorbike to cemetery
Picnic on wild berries
French toast with molasses
Croquet and Baked Alaskas
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
We'll come back for Indian Summer
And go our separate ways
Cover me with rain
Walk me down the lane
I'll drink from your drain
We will never change
No matter what they say
