Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

English family with children need help please

Hiya

We're visiting New York for the first time this Wednesday to Sunday - staying in Times Square but looking to explore.

We have 2 girls, one 4 and one 9 year old.

This site is fantastic but a trifle overwhelming!

Can someone help with recommendations for, say, 3 or 4 family and not touristy restaurants where we can get good quality food at a reasonably price - we're not rich!

It would be great to get a flavour of the diversity of the local food.

Thankyou in anticipation.

David

  1. My sister/brother in-law and their family (4 girls age 1- 7) were just in town from London. We had a great dinner at Landmarc in Soho with the entire entourage. Highly recommend that.

Also recommended to us... Otto, Bubby's and Clinton Street Baking Company. Also pretty much anywhere in Chinatown but I would recommend Amazing 66.

    1. Hi There!

I made you a list of places where you can bring kids, dress casually and enjoy walking around some interesting areas, all inexpensive:
      EAST HARLEM
      El Nuevo Caridad (Spanish/Dominican)
      2257-59 2nd Ave, (Corner E.116 St,) New York 10029
HUGE portions of Rice-n-Beans and Roast Chicken, etc. This is the Spanish 'hood, so much fun, lively people and this place is very clean. Order for two people, it'll be enough for all of you. Their lunch specials are practically free (most under $6.00). I like to sit at the table near the Take-Out area - it's like dinner theatre - great people-watching!

      MIDTOWN (Diamond District)
Diamond Dairy, Old Time Coffee Shop
      4 W 47th St, New York 10036
      Btwn 5th & 6th Ave
      Phone: 212-719-2694
You might be the only non-Chasidic person eating here but GO!!! Only open during the day M-F. Go for lunch for the BEST Tuna Sandwich, Homemade Blintzes and Vegetarian "Cholent" (Bean/Barley/Potato Stew - YUM). The cashier looks like an Orthodox Jewish version of Comedian Bill Murry and he is the nicest!!!

      TIMES SQUARE
      John's Pizzeria
      Times Square
      Pizza, Italian
      260 W 44th St, New York 10036
      Btwn 7th & 8th Ave
      Phone: 212-391-7560
Great Pizza and fun for kids. Besides this, I'd avoid most places in the area because they are all overpriced and LOUD!

      EAST VILLAGE
      Cafe Orlin
      Eclectic & International, Coffeehouses
41 Saint Marks Pl, New York 10003
      Btwn 1st & 2nd Ave
      Phone: 212-777-1447
My favorite place in the East Village, food's great, people-watching is great (Artists/Writers)
and their waitstaff is always very helpful. Try the Asian Sesame Salmon with Jasmine Rice and Seaweed; it's probably my favorite dish in NYC. Besides that, they always have sandwiches, pasta. THIS is real New York!

      EDGE OF EAST VILLAGE
      Sundaes and Cones
      Desserts & Bakeries, Coffeehouses
      95 E 10th St, New York 10003
      At 3rd Ave
      Phone: 212-979-9398
Take the kids here, the cutest ice cream place! Places to sit and all. Unusual flavors (Corn, Wasabi) and the usual (Chocolate, Butter Pecan, etc).

      EAST VILLAGE
      Yaffa Cafe
      Health Food, Vegetarian
97 Saint Marks Pl, New York 10009
      Btwn 1st Ave & Ave A
      Phone: 212-677-9001
"Hippy" place that's like eating in "I Dream of Jeannie's" bottle. Totally Bohemian. Great veggie burgers and salads! Your kids will love it!

      EAST VILLAGE
      Veselka ($$)
Eastern European, Diners & Coffee Shops
      144 2nd Ave, New York 10003
      At 9th St
      Phone: 212-228-9682
"Diner" offering Eastern European stuff (Stews, Perogies, etc. They also have Breakfast foods all the time and their pancakes are great).

      FINANCIAL DISTRICT
      Financier
French, Sandwiches, Desserts & Bakeries, Coffeehouses
35 Cedar St at 10 Liberty Plz, New York 10005
      Btwn Pearl & William St
      Phone: 212-952-3838
Fantastic French Pastries, beautiful but casual place. A nice place to rest your feet if you visit the Financial Area (or the Native American Museum).

      TRIBECA
      Walker's
      American (Traditional)
      16 N Moore St, New York 10013
      At Varick St
Charming New York Tavern, super Homemade food - FANTASTIC burgers!!! Great salads, sandwiches and pasta. Free Live Jazz on Sunday nights. Great atmosphere but ask to sit in the calm middle room if you go for dinner. Auggie is the Manager and she is GREAT!
      Phone: 212-941-0142

      CHELSEA
      Comfort Diner
Diners & Coffee Shops, American (Traditional)
      25 W 23rd St, New York 10010
      Btwn 5th & 6th Ave
      Phone: 212-741-1010
Pimped-out portions of diner food, very kid friendly and everything is delicious. I love their omelettes (Egg White w. Goat Cheese & Mushrooms) or their sandwiches. They also have great homemade cakes/pies and a kid-friendly staff. Lively during the day, relaxing at night
      Phone: 212-860-81

I'll leave it to someone else to suggest a Chinatown place and a Soul-Food place. Enjoy New York with the kiddies!
      Amy:)

      1. re: chocolatebirthdaycake

chocolatebirthdaycake - this is an awesome list for anyone! I haven't heard of some of these places, but they sound like gems. I look forward to checking a few of these out!

      2. David,
Alice's Tea Cup might be fun for your girls for brunch/lunch one day. Though, being English, Im not sure if the tea and scone there will measure up to what you are used to. But, it's a charming place. I love going and Im 34 years old! I think their portions are quite generous, too and brunch would certainly hold you over until dinner.

There are 3 locations, too! Upper West (the originial!), East 60s and Upper East side.
