Mombar on Steinway Street for traditional Egyptian. Or for something very special but iconoclastic, try the Kabab Café up the block run by the brother of Mombar's owner.

Correct. You may have seen Kabab Cafe profiled by Anthony Bourdain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBFDvy... .

Ali is the best, the food is terrific.. there is no better. And thank god he is so off the beaten track, that he can be cozy.I still dream of his cooking... http://www.gastronauts.net.

I've been meaning to get to an Egyptian place on Fresh Pond in Ridgewood which Robert Sietsema wrote about in a somewhat recent (last few months) article. It's pretty much a hookah bar that happens to have really good food which most of the patrons are oblivious to. Here's the link.
