headed out on a cool florida evening to explore the newest addition to mizner park . . . zed is extremely well appointed, reminiscent of a resort with great attention to detail throughout. fine woods, polished concrete, stainless steel, rock salt candles, unique ambient lighting, fountains, and flowing water surround you while a very audible eclectic mix of music fills the space. drinks at the lovely outdoor bar first, bourbon ginger lemonade and a blackberry mojito, fresh and light with all juices freshly squeezed. a very friendly service staff aside from some of the numerous hostesses who were a bit flustered at times. a good selection of food is available at the bar. i saw the impressive seafood sampler presented at the bar; crab claws, oysters, mussels etc. . . more than enough for two . . . perfect to start the evening with a glass of champagne! it's new so they were not offering everything on the menu yet but they will offer flights of wine along with their extensive wine list. a beautiful glass wine room is visible from the indoor bar area, perfect for intimate tastings. as we sat we were directed to the 'harvest tables' which are filled with fresh breads, charcuterie, an assortment of cheese, grilled vegetables, and a number of beautifully presented sides. i sampled the grilled mushrooms, asparagus, squash, tomato and mozzarella, focaccia, roasted beets, tomatillos and perhaps a few others i can't recall. everything was perfectly fresh and well seasoned. upon returning to the table our 'sides' were presented; a moist and flavorful corn bread, tender sauteed spaghetti squash and rich goat cheese scalloped potatoes. now the real food begins to arrive, delivered by 'chefs' . . . top sirloin, moroccan chicken, mahi mahi, seared tuna, grilled wahoo and salmon along with various other items. everything was perfectly cooked and simply seasoned. prices will be about $55 for the full experience plus drinks and dessert, around $35 for the 'harvest tables' only plus drinks etc. more than enough food for anyone as you may return to the harvest tables as often as you wish and enjoy as much of the freshly prepared items brought to your table as you like. it's a beautiful space with excellent food although i will need to become accustomed to retrieving my own food at the harvest tables.

  1. Called for reservations yesterday but not open yet. I think it opens next week. Anyways, sounds very promising for an entertaining evening.Kind of Chima-ish without as much meat... lots of seafood to choose from.

      Opens today (Nov. 10th, 2008).
      Well above Chima in variety, preparation, presentation and atmosphere.

        We are going this evening, I'm looking forward to trying the food and drinks on the menu. I've been to Chima many times, hopefully it is better than there? We'll see how it goes, I'll make sure to write a review once I'm home.

          They've done a great job on the bar and restaurant, it's very eye catching inside, I loved it as did the rest of my party. The bartenders on the outside seemed to have an attitude problem, one of the girls said she want's to kick someones ass right in front of us whilst handing over our check, the girl on the inside was lovely, very polite and informative.The music was pretty bad the night we went in, I was told it was someones ipod. I thought they'd be playing more mellow, chilled music but no, we had to listens to 80's rock it totally didn't fit the scene. ( I love that music, if I were in a casual bar or pub) not an establishment that charges $300 + for 3 people !!!
          Anyways let me tell you about the food, Blah ! The server came over and cut off a little lamb for me, I asked for a well done piece,my hubby and friend asked for theirs cooked to medium. I'm not even kidding when I say this, it was like the lamb had been killed on our plate. DISGUSTING, so rare it was a joke it made me feel ill ! The harvest bar wasn't too bad, they did have a nice selection of meats and breads with various dipping sauces. It was a shame about the hair that was in my husbands mushrooms though. So the food was very,very over priced for what we got. The chicken I highly recommend, it was very nice. The servers failed to say that it's extremely spicy which could pose as a problem if you can't eat spicy food !!
          Now to the service......Oh My God ! I understand this is a new place and it will have teething problems, I've been to many new places around the world, so I get that they will struggle in the beginning. So here goes... We had random servers coming over to us throughout the night asking how our food was. (That's fine I understand they need to come by and check that we are doing okay) However, it is insane to think how many times servers came over to us asking what our favorite was. It went a little like this in the space of 10 minutes and I'm not joking....... Server 1, server 2, then a chef, then a manager, Server 1 again then another random server and then to top it off the bloody HOSTESS came over and started babbling on !! I can not believe the amount of times we were interrupted. Our friend had to keep looking over his shoulder when he would tell us a story because he knew he'd be interrupted. We actually had to get the manager back and tell her we've not been able to finish a conversation without being interrupted in the midst of her saying sorry ANOTHER server came over and asked what our favorite meat was. We were pulling our hair out ! I blame the managers, and the reason is I think at the beginning of service they tell the staff to be polite and ask what the customers favorite thing is. There is a fine line to be polite to a customer but their comes a point when the individual must think hmmmm I should leave them in peace and let them actually eat their dinner !
          Desert was rubbish, I strongly advise not to get an Irish coffee ! It came over luke warm looking like English tea, I had them send it back. They tried again but it was still really bad. I could go on and on as there were a few more things that weren't up to par but I'll spare you all ;o)
          We won't be going back there for at least another 6 months, hopefully they will still be there to give them a second chance.

      took a second look at zed last night . . .
      it seems that the well dressed crowd only appears during the opening night and preview dinner events that i enjoyed. they have absolutely no dress code so everyone in shorts, t shirts, flip-flops etc. was wandering in to the bar etc. giving it the appearance of a 'vegas style buffet'. drinks at the outside bar were difficult to obtain as the bartenders were extremely slow to acknowledge anyone. i won't be back for a long time, if at all.

        I went ot ZED for one of the pre-opening nights and was at the outside bar witha few friends. We ordered the fondue and the short rib sliders. Both were very tasty. I had beer like always and my friends had cocktails, which they liked.
        I went my second time this past saturday night after work for drinks. I arrived at 11:30 and there were about 30 people at the bar and the loun ge area, some of them "Bar Flies" I usually see at Chops. We ordered drinks along with a butcher platter. The platter was so so. They had bresaola,salami and speck which I liked. I didn't like the duck confit(too sweet) and the liver wurst that was spread on the white bread and there was some sweet bread on it too. At exactly midnight we ordered a cheese plate. The bartender said that the kitchen is closed but she was able to order it. 20 minutes later we asked her about the cheese plate. She said that we maybe missed the cut off time. ????? Are we in a restaurant? I am sure there would be someone in the back cleaning. And a chef????
        We finally received a cheese plate. What a dissapointment for me. I don't like Blue Cheese, and there were 2 blue cheeses and another unidentifiable cheese on the platter along with some way too spicy caramelized pecans. They were so spicy they were unedible. I give them a few more more weeks to adjust to the Boca clientelle before I go back. I am not sure if this concept will survife here.

      2. TERRIBLE, WE SAT FOR THREE HOURS AND WERE OFFERED TWO TYPES OF MEAT. I ASKED THE WAITRESS TO GET THE MANAGER, HE CAME BY AND SAID "OH YOU ONLY GOT OFFERED TWO MEATS, I WILL SEND THEM OVER". THEY NEVER CAME. THE SAME TWO MEATS CAME BY AGAIN. I ASKED THE WAITRESS "WTF" AND SHE HAD NO ANSWER. WHEN THE BILL CAME THEY COMPED THE WHOLE MEAL? I ASKED THE WAITRESS WHAT HAPPENED AND SHE SAID "OH WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS" I WOULD EXPECT THE MANAGER TO AT LEAST GIVE US A REASON WHY IT WAS SO BAD. I LEFT HUNGRY? I WILL NEVER GO BACK, CHIMA IS THE WAY TO GO!!

        2. I have a problem, not with the food, but with the staff. I have tried the happy hour on 4 occasions now. Each visit I am stuck with this one, very rude bartender with attitude. Little guy...Brian???? He ruins the entire experience. He should be fired actually!
          When I have had table service, it has been fairly good.
          I do not know how a restaurant this size will continue operating with such high prices.

              I have been twice at the tail end of 2009. I think their salads/apps/soups etc at the buffet are delicious and the display is gorgeous, there are also lots of cheeses and breads and charcuterie and both times we did not even bother to order the grilled meats because for $20 we could fill up at the self serve area which was enough.

              Last summer they ran a special at the bar - wine for $5 and half price apps which were very good - I don't know if they are still doing that.

              I still like the place, the bar area outside is pretty and their strawberry and kiwi cocktail is yummy.

                Was a big fan at first. Really went downhill. They lowered their prix fixe price by $20 (to $39pp) but offer much less. No filet. When I asked for Tuna they literally brought me 3 slices as thin as a quarter, 2 inches square....are they serious???? Never again! Back to Chima!!!
