we're coming to New Orleans from Los Angeles next week to celebrate our 9th wedding anniversary. We were planning to have dinner at Commander's Palace and Stella! but the concierge at our hotel suggested Upperline instead of Stella! as she felt it was unique to New Orleans and Stella! might not be. I can't find anything specific about Upperline in previous posts. Can anyone fill me in as to what we might expect and whether it is a good choice?
Not a fan of Upperline. Food is ok but I wouldn't waste a dinner there. I prefer Commander's for lunch (garden room). August for an anniversary dinner. Herbsaint is less formal with a bit more local flavor.
Joanne Clevenger is a "kick," and a New Orleans "character." Upperline is a "uniquely New Orleans" restaurant, filled with folk art and everything-under-the-sun-but-the-kitchen-sink. My wife and I enjoyed our dinner there, loved Joanne, and are very glad we went.
There is little about Stella! that is uniquely New Orleans, but the food is definitely better at Stella! than at Upperline.
So . . . what is your priority?
I'd say go to Commander's if you're looking for great food, service and atmosphere, all of which are several notches above Upperline's.
