Orchid Restaurant in Metuchen, N.J.

I just learned of a glatt kosher restaurant located in Metuchen named Orchid. Anyone know anything about it or been there? Food Quality? Ambience? Service? Prices?

We ate there several times about 4-5 years ago, when my parents were still in the area. We always had a good meal, even when we were a large family group with assorted young cousins & grandparents, etc.
My kids pronounced their french fries the very best they ever had. I thought they were delicious, as were the salads, etc.
If the ownerhip has not changed, which apparently it has not, I would recommend it. Service was friendly, if a bit sporadic.

i actually worked there as a waiter for a couple of months.

it was originally a kosher deli with a conservative hashgacha. it was bought out about 7-8 years ago by the current owner who is israeli and has been becoming more frum. she decided to get a frum hashgacha and has been doing VERY well ever since.

the food is very good, and the place is very clean, not so common in your typical nj based israeli owned deli.

the portions are gigantic and the quality is really good. the place is very small and can get crowded on weekends and holidays. i worked there about 5 years ago, and i still go back. it is a very nice change from the teaneck scene

I ate there a few times about a year ago. Its a very small but nice restaurant. There is a deli counter up front and a small seating area with waiters in the back. It was packed every time I went there. The food is modern american. From what I recall, they have severall fish dishes, and things like chicken marsala etc.. all served with rice and veggies. But they do have very unique items - something a real chef is making up not the usual kosher fare. I always got the coconut chicken, which was a chicken cutlet witht his nice sweet sauce and rice and veggies. The food is high quality and I always enjoyed it. I would highly recommend it, especially for that area where there are not a lot of nice kosher places.

It's apparently owned by the same people who own Mosaica in Vauxhall, N.J.

              Not so strange.

Here is the history. Central New Jersey has long supported an observant jewish community: Highland Park, Edison, Metuchen etc. While the Kosher Butcher in Metuchen sadly has closed (a combination of Shop Rite availability and shift of North Edison population from Jewish to Indian), the kosher deli in Metuchen has been a fixture for many many years.

Over time, the deli morphed into the Orchid.

(Conversely, Highland Park lost Deli King many years ago, finding itself without 'basari' fare for some time. Now Highland Park has Park Place, Shushan Grill and the Chinese food - but no deli.)
