ISO dinner Saturday night in Costa Mesa?

Hi - We're going to the Orange County Performing Arts Center. Anyone have any suggestions in the area. We'll have a party of five - Italian, upscale Latino fusion, seafood, Chinese seafood or Thai would be our preferences. Thank you.

  1. Onotria would fit the Italian criteria, as would Antonello's. Between the two, I'd go with Onotria.

Upscale Latino fusion - nothing remotely fitting that description in the area
Seafood - There is Scott's Seafood, but I wouldn't recommend it
Chinese seafood - there is a place that took over the former Russell's Seafood on MacArthur just north of the 405, but haven't been to it.
Thai - George's Thai Bistro is on Bristol & Sunflower. It's your average Thai restaurant is ok, nothing to write home about.

Professor, Moon Palace Asian Bistro was what replaced Russell's Seafood, but I think Moon Palace is now closed because its sign is gone. I never went there either after Russell's closed.

Best option for Chinese seafood nearby would probably be in Irvine, at Sam Woo or SW Seafood.

    2. Do your tastes run to Cubin? Habana on Bristol never fails, great cocktails, sangria, and I love the food. The ambiance is great, too. On Bristol, south of South Coast, in the anti-mall.

If you go, here are a few of my faves...
Bocaditos--(appetizer) small croisants filled with ground beef, raisons, other stuff, a bit on the greasy side, but oh-so-good
Tamale Pie (entree)-vegetarian, on the heavy side, but great
Crispy Roast chicken, comes with plantains, black beans and marinated onions, so good
the deep fried banana thing for dessert-yummmmmm!!!!!

      2. I'll 2nd Habana and strongly rec their Mojitos. I'll also add Old Vine Cafe where you can either go with their tasting menu or a la carte.

Hi - We went to Habana which was wonderful except for the mojitos. Mine was weak and flavorless. Everything else was great especially the halibut, ropa vieja and the crab cake appetizers. Thanks to all.

Wow, I'm so sorry to hear about your mojitos. Mine have always been stellar there. I always opt for the more expensive of the 2 options. I think that 1 is $8 and the other is $10. Did you?

            1. re: JAB

I honestly don't know - I just asked for a mojito. In any case, that was the only minor blemish on the evening.

I forgot about the ropa vieja!!! Okay, now I'm jealous. And hungry. Did anyone get the fried banana dessert? It's sooooo gooood.
