Where to take a group for appetizers & drinks only?

I'd like to invite about 10-12 people out for a casual birthday gathering for drinks and shared appetizers. Location: UES, mid-town, or downtown. We need a comfortable spot that can accomodate us standing up plus decent food and drinks. Ideally, I'd like to find a large, comfortable bar, not a private dining room (although I'm open to it if the atmosphere is right). Any recommendations for a fun birthday night out?

  1. Try Flute - they have a great 2 for 1 (on all food & drinks) Happy Hour on Tuesdays. I've only been the Gramercy location.

    Flute Gramercy. 40 East 20th Street New York, NY 10003-1318 Phone: (212) 529- 7870

Thanks for the replies. I'll check them out!
Have you been to Alta? I was thinking about that for tapas, but again - don't want everyone to have to sit down at a table in order to enjoy.

      2. How many people and what type of ambiance are you look for?

About 12 people. Comfortable bar or restaurant atmosphere -- not a meat market! Thinking of italian/spanish restaurant or classic old-fashioned New York city location.

Thought I would bump up this post since it covers my needs. Any new/updated ideas for a fun happy hour place w/decent food where the bar area is big enough for a group of 20 or so? We're all in late 30's/early 40's. Any east-side neighborhood, from UE to LE is fine.

        2. Try Boqueria in SoHo for Tapas. Nice spot.

Any other ideas? Looking for maybe a drink special or 2, decent bar food, ample bar space and a place where a 40something doesn't feel like a grandma.
