Canned cannellini beans are a staple in our pantry. But lately, the last 3 months, they have been unavailable in any of the Harris-Teeters where we shop or at our other usual grocery stores. I Googled "cannellini shortage" and got to a site about a year old that talked about how great Progresso cannellini is and in the recent comments, others had noted the same thing, not being able to find them. It seemed to be east coast mainly in the comments, but are others noticing this and does anyone have an explanation?

I've found that the only place they are located in any of the grocery stores I visit (Teeter, Publix, Kroger) is in the hispanic/ethic (or whatever they are calling it now) aisle. I always find the Goya brand there.

Thanks,I am checking ethnic foods also. Goya is the other brand that we have used, from our usual Teeter, but there is neither brand available. Progresso had always been with the other canned veges. Oh well.

These are also a staple in my pantry. I shop at Raley's here in Nevada and they haven't been available for the last couple of months. Also, the cans of Ro-tel are MIA.

I asked our local foodwriter at the Charlotte Observer if she had any ideas about this. She checked General Mills website(Progresso brand) to see if any info was there and found nothing. But a day later this appeared:
FYI : General Mills Consumer Services Says: November 3rd, 2008 at 5:32 pm Thank you for your interest in our Progresso Cannellini Beans. As you may have noticed we have had a bit of problem recently with supplying our grocery chains with these great beans. Let me first apologize for that and to let you know what has happened. Due to a recent crop shortage we have been unable to keep up with production demands and that has led to the recent availability problems you are experiencing. The good news is we now have enough beans to start production once again. You should start seeing Progresso Cannellini Beans on your store shelves in early January. Go ahead and tell your store manager to put there order in now. Thanks again for your interest. Mike Grant, Progresso Brands Product Specialist, General Mills, Inc.

So the mystery is solved this time. Here is the link to the newspaper post: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/qna/forum/food_questions_and_answers/index.html .
