Rodded! Rodded! Rodded!

Thanks to the person who posted a casual mention to Rodded a few weeks ago. Saying something like - duck soup just like in Bangkok.
This is sort of about how stupid I am. Like - I think of Thaitown as Hollywood between Vermont and Western, and when I'm there, I keep my eyes out and my nose open. Sniff at every storefront, that sort of thing.
Rodded turns out to be three blocks from my place, right across the little street from Espresso mi Cultura, the latino intellecto-artisto cafe that I spend half my life at. I have sat and graded innumerable papers on the seats outside, staring directly at Rodded, and not once, NOT ONCE, did I investigate. Because I am stupid. Because I have "food mode" and "cafe mode" and ne'er the twain shall meet, or whatever.
Because if I'd paused once, in one of the three hundred times I was walking to the cafe, once and sniffed at the open door of Rodded, once noted the crowds of happy Thai people inside, I would have been inside like a bolt. But not once did I. Idiot me. Gotta read it on the board first.
Anyway: cruised in at 3 and got duck soup (listed under Noodles). Goddamn! A great soup. Dense, roast-y duck flavor, tons of goddamn spices and lively flashes and damn does it zing.
A total opposite from the Ruen Pair duck soup. RP makes a mellow, suave, deep sort-a soup. Very Chinese in spirit. Pure many-layered duck flavor, at every level. Rodded - hard hits of simple duck flavor, pushed up against all sorts of sour and burning flavors. Beautiful! Very lively.
A new Thaitown favorite. Good enough that now, three days later, I've been thinking about it all day. Has been nothing but pure force of will to not have it for lunch, wait for the girlfriend to arrive to share it for dinner. Hard. I try to be generous. It's hard.
Note: spiciness level. Nothing that the Mexicans or Indians have can affect me that much. My outer limit is certain dishes at Sichuan food - the time I had only one friend and tried to split the whole of a Chung King beef tofu hot special dish was near my max - and, say, green papaya salad ordered spicy at RP. That needs to be cut with an unspicy soup.
Medium here was about as high as comfortable for me, for a soup, eaten by itself. So be warned: medium spicy means pretty spicy.
My recollection is that Rodded is on a block in which there are at least two OTHER Thai restaurants within the block on the same side of the street; two literally next door to each other. Sounds like a perfect set-up for intensive A-B comparision-reviewing.
I always order mine mild and then spice it up to my liking using the 3 chilli condements provided at the table.
