Has any one tried the new waffle shop near Dundas Square? I've tried them twice now and still reserving judgment. I've never had a yeast based waffle prior to Wanda's so I don't have a good frame of reference. The first time, I saw a customer walking out with a waffle covered in chocolate, whipped cream and bananas and I just had to try it. I swapped out the bananas for strawberries - for almost $7 with tax, I got one waffle, maybe 3 strawberries, two squirts of redi-whip and chocolate sauce. In my opinion, that was too expensive. The waffle itself was yeasty in a good way but there was too much chocolate sauce (better than generic ice cream style syrup, but not great) and things were soggy by the time I got home. The second time, I was ambushed by the smell of waffles again and tried a maple waffle without any trimmings (just under $3). The maple waffle had odd junks in it, maybe maple sugar or candy? It was tasty but not outstanding. Both times, it took longer than expected to get my waffle, this might be part of the growing pains of a new place. I also found the service both times, a bit uncomfortable for a lack of a better description, i.e. staff swearing at each other in front of customers, the owners (i.e. I'm guessing) reprimanding the staff loudly in front of customers. Has any one had a better experience?

The 'chunks' in your waffle were probably from pearl sugar, a typical ingredient in Liège-style waffles.

Have you tried Goed Eten in Kensington as yet? ( www.goedeten.ca ) They're the real deal and much cheaper than that. They're only drawbacks are that they are smaller than real Liege waffles, they only bake them once or twice a week (so they're not as hot and fresh as they could be) and their opening hours are pretty sporadic (I've passed by more than once and they were closed when they were supposed to be open) so far, they're the best I've had in T.O.

I got the plain waffle on a friend's advice and found it quite decent if heavy after a massive izakaya meal. It was crunchy in all the right places. I think if I could sit down with with the plain waffle and maybe a cup of black coffee instead of tearing into it under the awning of HMV while it rained, it could be much improved.

There were no hiccups or mishaps with service and it was busy last night.

Finally got around to trying Wanda's last night. In a word, disappointing. Tastes like they use a mix. No pearl sugar, no yeast, little flavour and pricey. Comparing these to real Liege waffles is like comparing Montreal style bagels to those "bread-with-a-hole-in-it" you get at the No Frills. The pre-packaged ones you can get a Sobeys that are imported from the Netherlands are better.

Emailed Goed Eten through their website and Johan (the owner who also owns Le Petit Dejeuner on King) wrote me back and said that they ARE closed but plan to relocate.

Johan, if you read this, don't worry, you have no competition from Wanda's.

Too bad about Goed Eten. The waffles were delicious there. But I do look forward to them finding a better location, a place were people can relax with some waffles and a cup of coffee.
