Teriyaki Row (aka, Smith St.)
As if we needed further proof that Smith St. has gone right into the nutbox *rim shot* another Japanese joint is opening up. This time, in the old Videomania space the sign just went up for "Kiku, Japanese Fusion and Lounge." I assume an outpost of the same restaurant in the Slope.
So if my calculations are correct that means three trad japanese restaurants (Hana, Ki, Kyoto), one "fusion" restaurant (Kiku), and one chinese restaurant that also does sushi (Szechuan Garden). And that's just between Dean and Douglass.
I'm not sure what the menu of impending veggie fusions "Wild Ginger" yet.
On the bright side, it looks like that's it for the season... no more storefronts being worked on as far as I can tell. On the not so bright side, that means that the northside of Smith will continue to lack a BBQ joint, decent pizza or mexican.

A few corrections: Char4 across the street from the Met at Baltic has BBQ (tho' not cheap) and Caserta Vecchia is more than decent pizza. I am pretty sure that Szechuan Gardens has stopped doing sushi. Also, the storefront that used to be Sapodilla had people moving around inside on Sat. night & the former tapas place further down Smith. has a new paint job.

Thanks for the info on the Sapodilla space.
IMO, Char No.4 is not a BBQ place, though it does have a couple BBQ items on their menu. Delicious, but not a BBQ joint.
Caserta Vecchia and Savoia both have decent pizza, you're right. I should have said a decent pizza joint. Those are both italian restaurants that serve pizza. An important distinction, I think.
