Upscale in Allston?

cambridgejen Nov 3, 2008 10:05 AM

I have friends visiting next weekend, and they are looking forward to a nice upscale dinner when they're here. We were originally thinking of Oleana or Rendezvous. Now, because of other social commitments, it looks like we might have to stay closer to the Allston area. Is there anything in Allston that's on par with those options or close, that could seat a party of 6 on a Saturday night? I have a lot of Allston favorites but nothing really qualifies as "upscale."

Yeah, that was the one place I could think of that comes kinda sorta close.

I ate at Privus once and was not that impressed. The whole place was sort of cavernous and empty and the sushi was nothing special.

How about Devlins in Brighton? It is not on par with the places that you mentioned but it nicer than most places in Allston or Brighton.

funny it seems that Yelpers seem to like it.
          go figure....

I am thrilled at the current incredible range of options for dining out in Allston - I grew up in the neighborhood in the 1960s, and nobody would have predicted the current vitality and ethnic variety of the scene. However, one area in which Allston is sorely lacking is "upscale." I really can't think of anyplace that would fit the bill for you. Sorry!

Probably best to go next door to Brookline if you are able to do that. Not a lot of upscale options there, but more than in Allston....

Yeah, I'd either go to Lineage or La Morra.

Those are both great ideas - thank you! I will see if they have room for a table of 6 during the Saturday rush.

That is an excellent choice. And Jasmine Bistro isn't too far from Allston--a quick trip west on Cambridge Street from Allston into Brighton Center....

Thank you for this recommendation! I will surely check it out. How is the wine list? Would they be able to accommodate a party of 6?

The wine list is decent enough. I had a very nice wine there that I can't remember off the top of my head. They have some Hungarian wines there, as well as others from France, Italy, South America, etc. And as to having a party of 6 there, that should be no problem, but definitely call them in advance.

I think the wine list is pretty reasonable and has some interesting offerings.

hmmm... I'd hit Washington Square Tavern in Brookline. Good food/vibes/cocktails/price

Daily Catch in Brookline is only a five to ten minute walk from Allston Village.

It's not upscale and it's been closed for a couple years.

At least a couple of years - and still sitting vacant! I wonder if there's some legal tie-up with the lease or something, it seems like too prime a location to stay empty for so long.

                      Guess I'm behind the times.
