Szechaun Kitchen on 1st ave at 79th

I am curious if anyone knows this place? It's take out or delivery only; apparently they've been around since '74. It's very close to my pat and I love szechaun cooking so would be great if it gets a thumbs up from any chowhounds.

  1. It is OK, the best chinese in the neighborhood is Our Place on third Avenue and 82nd street.

Thanks; I'm familiar with Our Place and agree that it's good; just hoping for another option!

    2. I love this place
Delicious ginger shrimp, love their eggplant...never had a disappointing meal
and they will gladly customize any dish - for dietary concerns.

Ask them to "kick it up a notch" if you really want it spicy.

Cook right before yr eyes...very quick.

      1. they , in their original location around 77th street, were one of the first szechuan places in NYC. it was quite a revelation to me when i ate there the 1st time in my teens.

for delivery they are good, but i usually order from six happiness. i like shanghai pavillion on 3rd, and the place that used to szechuan hunan cottage on 84th and york.

Tried it on Saturday night. Chicken with peanuts was good but will follow the suggestion and ask for more spice next time. LOVED the eggplant! Will definitely order again. Thanks for the help!

        2. Definitely above average- really enjoy the Chef's Special Chicken (but ask for it with white meat)
Best thing about this place is the delivery is FAST- like really, really fast. Have clocked it on average at less than 15 minutes from when you place your order- and I live 17 blocks away!

Thanks for that particular rec, Heinlein42. I'd always previously had the chicken w broccoli in garlic sauce and pork lo mein but I really liked the Chef's Special Chicken. I find their service to be quite surly, but I guess it's a trade-off considering the speed at which the order is taken, prepared and handed off.
