I know, you are cooking today and my answer is not the East Village, but the Park Slope Food Coop has it. So you could get a Brooklyn friend to stock you up for the future. Good luck for today.

re: kathryn
The dual specialty store is a great neighborhood resource, now that Pete's spices is long gone. I hadn't been there in ages, but when I stopped in last night I found that they are far more organized than they used to be, and their inventory is better and more varied. It's a fun place to browse - I dropped in for fennel seeds (thinking maybe the fennel in porchetta is what fills my stomach and settles it at the same time) and I left with fennel seeds, tea, shiny bracelets. and a fun 6-compartment mukhwas dispenser. (Mukhwas is the digestive candied fennel seed assortment that you get after your meal in an Indian restaurant.)
And I hadn't read this post yet, but I did notice whole star anise.
