Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in the SF Bay Area (including Berkeley, Oakland, Napa, Sonoma, Marin, and San Jose)

Poor House Bistro, SJ report w/ pics

I finally tried Poor House Bistro. Heading to Downtown I took Market, Rt on San Fernando, Rt on Autumn (one way street). Restaurant is on the corner on the Left, saw the parking sign, there's about 10 cars spot for parking in the back. That was nice. It's only for restaurant patrons, if you're there for the game don't park there. Sign said only 1hr parking, but the owner told me I could park in his lot if I was watching the live jazz & eating there.

At 5pm there were some people eating there, check out their menus there or online. I already knew what I wanted from reading the menu online.

Head to the cashier, place your order, pay, and you get a pager that'll blink when it's ready.

I got:

Classic muffaletta half of a 9" round. It was $10.50. It's Huge! I only ate half of the Half and took the other side home. Boring meat, supposed to be: salami, ham, mortadella, & provolone, tasted like supermarket meat, not enough olive salad mix.

Cup of seafood gumbo $4.50 - rice on top, seafood like small shrimp, okra. It was just ok. I added the habanero sauce to give it some flavor.

Total with tax $16.24, before tip. Credit cards taken.

Friend got me a corn muffin $1.95 - I thought it was ok, was kinda warm. Soft package of butter given & packs of honey too. Both helped the dry corn muffin. I liked the crispy top.

P. got a burger w/ potato salad $7.25 - he thought it was all ok. You can get potato salad, coleslaw, or french fries.

I stayed 1hr to hear Lara Price & Yesterday's Band play from 6-9pm. They took a break around 7:15pm, then I left. She & her band are pretty good, though the music is Loud! We sat in the outdoor covered area to see her. Lara & her band play there every Thurs.

I saw one unisex bathroom in the restaurant. Sign said men's toilet outside which my friend said is a pit toilet.

Recommended if you want to drink or eat before a Shark's game. It's only a 5-10 min walk to HP Pavilion from the restaurant.
