LA: Japanese black beer (kuronama)?

I'll be in Los Angeles in the coming few weeks and am hoping to find restaurants serving kuronama, a Japanese black beer, which has a very limited distribution in the U.S. (California, but not New Jersey). Asahi has one of the best known brands of kuronama (Asahi Black). See my recent posts for background and my similar search a few months ago while in San Francisco and more recently in San Diego:

Also, if you know of any grocery/liquor stores in Los Angeles area selling kuronama, please pass those along too. It's been reported that Mitsuwa in LA carries Asahi Black. Thanks very much.

  1. I saw it @Izakaya bincho yesterday and passed up on it...

    1. 99 Ranch carries it as well. I've seen it here and there at various specialty beverage/booze shops and Gelson's/Bristol Farms/Whole Foods- kinda markets as well. The best price? My guess would be 99 Ranch - I think it was about $12/6pack...

      1. Hi njfreqflyer,

As ns1 said, Izakaya Bincho has it. My Beer Hound in our group absolutely loved it (and you get some great, down-to-earth dishes as well). :)

        1. Thanks very much for your replies. I did get to Izakaya Bincho and enjoyed it very much. See my posting here:

Some addtional web-searching had restaurant hits for Asahi Black at:
          - Yatai at 8535 W Sunset Blvd, West Hollywood
          - Kiriko at 11301 W Olympic Blvd
          - Orris at 2006 Sawtelle Blvd
          - Kabuki at 6081 Center Drive and other locations
          - Sushi Roku at 1401 Ocean Avenue, Santa Monica

... none of which I made it to on this trip. I did pick up a couple of six packs (bottles) at the downtown Mitsuwa, where they were $12 each -- black gold as far as I'm concerned and worth every penny. Next time I'm in LA, I'll have to get more and carefully pack a few in my suitcase and bring them home with me!

I'm glad to hear you found your fortune and also gave Izakaya Bincho a shot. I was there tonight and had a couple Kuronamas myself. :)
