Family/locally owned in the Valley
One of the things my mother likes about visiting us in Long Beach are the family/locally owned neighborhood cafes and restaurants like Coffee Cup Cafe, Bake 'n Broil, and the Village Cafe. These are not upscale, fancy expensive places, just moderately priced, non-chain establishments with good food and a lot of repeat local customers.
She lives in North Hills, very close to Northridge and says she does not know about many similar places in the Valley. She already goes to Las Fuentes, A&W, and Mandarin Deli, and does not like Indian food, but will eat almost any other type of cuisine. Suggestions?

One of my favorite Mexican places is on the NE corner of Sepulveda and Plummer in North Hills. It's called Los Tres Hermanos. You order at the counter and they bring the food to you. Their chicken tacos (both soft and crispy) are fabulous, and I often order one of the shrimp dishes. Their guacamole is also a winner. They offer indoor and outdoor seating.

She might like Emle's on Reseda between Nordoff and Plummer. Their omelets are good at breakfast...i'm not big on french toast, but supposedly that's their specialty. haven't been for other meals.

It's not all that close to her, but Nat's Early Bite is a family-owned-and-run old-school coffee shop with a great neighborhood feel and simple but great food, at Burbank and Hazeltine in Van Nuys.

I'll second Nat's. A great breakfast spot with fabulous homemade jams and breads! The place is small so expect a wait on weekends, but the table turn around is quick.

I second Emle's. I have eaten there for all meals and really enjoyed it. It's right near A&W and Mandarin Deli.

what kind of joint is L' affair, it souinds like a stuffy old-school french restaurant.
is olympia kabab house any good?
and why is puro sabor linked as a duplicate?
thanks.

L'Affair is French, but not stuffy. Basically the only option for somewhat fine dining in the North valley. Very good food and reasonably priced, although they recently jacked up the prices a little.
Olympia Kebab House is a good Middle Eastern place in Granada Hills, although maybe a little overpriced for what it is. About the best option for Middle Eastern in the area unless you want to drive to Sherman Oaks (Carnival) or Encino (Alcazar).
