Bastide for 1-Mixed experience
I had a night to myself and a bonus to blow. No one i knew was interested so I decided to go to Bastide alone. I have an ongoing thing about going to restaurants that have been reviewed by Viraballa and compare experiences......
Of course the ambiance is incredible. I was seated in a small room with an Andy Warhol tomato can for a light fixture. I stared at the Mao paintings all night and was leaning against the wonderful Russian piece of trees.
Once comfortable, I was approached for my dinner. I asked for the tasting menu and the wine tasting. The service was good in the beginning, with multiple waiters attending. As the food began to arrive the somellier appeared with my first wine. I am not going to go into a long winded discussion here but I had 6 wines. Not one was expensive or world class. All were interesting but the tab was $160!!!!!! And not one burgundy or truly exceptional wine. It is interesting to note that Viraballa has always raved about the incredible wines she gets when dinning here. Well it is clear they know who she is. In her most recent review this week she mentioned truffles on the cheese course. I did not have a single truffle in my meal and I did have the same cheese course as her.
But the real hitch was the same as when the chef cooked at Providence, I was still really hungry at the end of the menu. So I asked for more. This is when service got less than friendly. It seemed that this was causing the staff to work harder than they would have liked. I truly expected a visit from the kitchen at this point to ascertain what I needed to feel replete but no, the chef just tried to blow me away with two meat courses that were really great. Am I the only one who is hungry after the tasting menu??????
Anyway my true impression is that if you want the experience of the LA Times at Bastide, you better go to dinner with their reviewer.
Wow. That is very unfortunate. I ate there this past spring with a small group, and we had excellent service. However, like you, I was underwhelmed by the wine pairings. The food, however, was sublime and I walked away as fat as a tick.
If I remember correctly, SIV was critical of the truffles on the cheese course. Maybe they took them away in response to that criticism.
I don't care how good the food is. If you spend $160 on a tasting menu and walk away hungry, something is wrong. I haven't been to Bastide since it first opened, and I don't think I'll be returning any time soon.
