Pop up survey crashing lists
This problem has spread to lists
Places pop up survey crash
http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/568025
I can no longer access my private or public lists without ...
- the pop up survey
- followed by an error message
- followed by IE7 browser crashing
- followed by my having to shut down my compter and reboot.
Same screen shots just a different location.

Engineering has done some work on this, can people who were experiencing the problem please confirm whether you're still seeing it or if it has been corrected.

re: Jacquilynne
Nope. Tried it a little after you posted and my computer froze up and I needed to shut down.
This happens in Places too. I wish they would just remove the survey from that part of the site. Between the application errors and the pop up surveys, it is unpleasant trying to update or add places.

Can everyone who is having this problem please let me know what your cookie settings are in your browser options? Are you allowing all cookies? Disallowing third party cookies?
Do you have any sites on your list of sites blocked from setting cookies? In particular, is 'question-market.com' on that list?
Do you currently have any cookies from question-market.com in your list?
If you don't know how to check these items, let me know what browser / version you're using and I'll try to provide instructions.

re: Jacquilynne
To simplify this a bit. I have two pc's running under the same operating systems using IE.7. On one I am only using browser pretty basic security. The other has more spyware and other security programs. This problem is identical on both. So I'm going with the pc that has minimal software to rule out other possible problems.
You didn't ask, but the browser pop up blocker is set to medium: block most automatic pop ups
I disallow third party cookies. I do that specifically because of Chowhound. Without that I would get between 16 - 21 cookies everytime I signed on to Chowhound. It brought my computers to its knees in terms of response time.
I don't have any sites specifically blocked from setting cookies.
I have no cookies from question-market.com. Also, when I cleared all my cookies recently to see if that would clear things up, there was absolutely no change.

re: rworange
Just another note. It is odd that this usually only gets kicked off in two parts of this website - Places and Lists. Occasionaly the pop up will happen on the boards which gets me nervous, but it doesn't crash or freeze the computer.
For all puposes I have abandoned Places between this and the application errors. When I really want to update places the tricks I have to use are absurd ... trying to open the record three, four or more times until one time doesn't include the pop up. Trying to get into edit before the pup up crashes the record. If it still does then copying the url, opening a new tab(because once crashed that tab must be closed or another error occurs, and then in the new tab pasting the url and adding /edit to the end.

re: rworange
Thanks, I'll pass that along.
I suspect the blocking of third party cookies is why you're seeing the pop-up so often -- normally you'd see it, get some cookies and not see it again for a long time but since you're disallowing the cookie, the site doesn't know you've seen it before.

re: Jacquilynne
for me, it doesn't appear to be the cookies, as long as i don't have the flashplayer plug in enabled. But yes, I have the question market cookie on my list. It's not just the floating surveys, but the flashy top right hand corner ads that seem to be causing me problems.
My computer seems to primarily have problems when there are lots of ads, like this one, and a certain social networking site that lately has begun to include more and more ads.
maybe i just have a weak computer.........

Just wanted to add that I noticed today that the problem of freezing up is worse. It has happened each time I've noticed the Chase ad at both the banner on top and the uppermost ad at right. I've manually shut down 3 times today. Maybe I should just give up CH for a while. sigh.

rworange, I don't want to hijack your post, but I too have had numerous problems with CH the past couple of weeks, and on IE7 in general. My text started lagging, and my IE is crashing all over the place....my computer won't reboot on it's own, and i'm increasingly having to manually power off the computer.
It seems to happen quite a lot more on CH than any other site I visit, and one I visited today that hadn't before, froze on me when a pop up survey came up.
pop up blockers don't seem to catch these things.

re: im_nomad
Yep ... that is the other problem I haven't mentioned yet ... my computer won't reboot. I have had to pulll the plug out of the computer. This is NOT good.
Ditto about pop up blockers not catching this ... and my mantra for a long while ... this happens on no other site but Chowhound.

re: rworange
This freezing up and requiring a reboot always happens to me when the Chase ads are on, no matter which board I am on. And ONLY when the Chase ads appear. I have also experienced the problem of having to unplug the computer. It's not good. These problems all seem related and have been continuing for a while now.

re: rworange
I found a "solution" for a while, when I ran Firefox with no flash player plug in....all i would get was a floating empty box, with "plug in required" inside.....ads on the site, also for the most part blank. Firefox ran like a charm, and didn't crash once.
Of course, I wasn't able to online game or watch stuff like youtube videos without this...so i installed it for Firefox....random crashes are back again.
I've yet to figure out if it's my computer, or some of the ads in general, but i had not one problem without the ads.

re: im_nomad
I run Firefox with lots of things blocked and have for some time. While I'm not crashing, I have noticed that performance slows down considerably on this site if I go too long without clearing the cache. I used to only have to do it once or twice a month, now I need to do it once or twice a week or else my browser freezes and I have to "force quit". If anything I'm reading chowhound less than before the redesign and my viewing of other sites has not changed.

You shouldn't be getting a pop-up survey every time you click (and of course, it shouldn't be crashing your system) are you perhaps blocking the cookie that would prevent the pop-up from coming back all the time?

re: Jacquilynne
No. I have changed not one thing to my system for quite a while. Everything was working quite well until about a week ago when this started in places. A few days ago it spread to places. Since things aren't getting fixed anyway, I worked around it. There is no workaround as of a few hours ago. Every time I look at at list, mine or anyone's. I have not changed a thing on my side.

re: Jacquilynne
I have cleared every cookie on my computer, somthing that makes me VERY unhappy, and I still cannot get into lists at all without the page crashing. So I can not access any of my lists private or public. I can barely access places and this is now spreading to any access I have to the boards ... which is the reason I went through the whole hassle of clearing cookies. There was no cookie that was being blocked because they were all gone.
As mentioned before, there is not one thing I have changed on my system. This started for no reason last week.
