Saluggi's Pizza
Ate at this place last nite
On Church between Canal and Lispenard
Definetly a gourmet style pizza
Thick heavy slabs of cheese on top of a very tasty sauce with parmesan (I think) sprinkled on top. A thin but cruchy crust. It did flop a little at the tip, but no matter
Was excellent

This place is great. I don't know if they've changed recently or if the other comments are incorrect, but their mozzarella is fresh! More than fresh, they make it themselves on-site. Really good, not greasy at all.
Incredible crust. We like the Brussels sprout pizza. Nice balance between the traditional and the new-artisanal. We take the subway from the UWS to get this pizza. (And the beet-arugula-lemon vinaigrette salad is lovely too.) Highly, highly recommended. To our taste this place rivals the best in NYC. (Though our favorite is still Frank Pepe's in New Haven.)
Give it a try--they don't seem as busy as they should be, given the quality of the pizza.

Had a late lunch here yesterday. 2 slices and a soda for $6.50.
Pizza was pretty good, nice flavor to the sauce and crust. Cheese could have been better, tasted like cheap Mozz and was very greasy. The char on the bottom of the slice was very uniform and it was a very crispy slice. Probably because they have a gas oven there.
- Fresh Basil: Yes!
- Wine: Yes!The place was clearly brand new, they were still talking about how to decorate when I was there tuesday. It is an odd hybrid of counter service and table service, I went to the counter to order but then a waitress came up to seat me and brought me my slices. I am not used to that in a pizza joint!
I will probably go back, it is clearly the best in the area even if it has a long way to go to be the best overall.
