Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in other regions of the World

What's exceptional in Amsterdam nowadays?

We try to visit Amsterdam every year or so, and have a week-long trip scheduled for December. We have loved De Witte Uyll on recent trips, and will certainly go back this time. A lesser-known place we enjoyed last year was De Leute (pardon my spelling) in Jordaan.

Any similar recommendations you can offer would be much appreciated. We are staying in Centraal but are happy to walk a couple of miles for good meals, or take taxis/subway.

Searching this board I see some raves for Van de Kaart, Marius, De Belhamel, and De Kas. Are they still great? Any other places we should try? Indonesian recommendations are welcome also, especially if they are not swarmed with tourists.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions.

    1. I was in Amsterdam about a month ago with a local friend. I have enjoyed Bojo in the past, indonesian near Leidseplein. Wau was an excellent malaysian restaurant on Zeedjik. We had a very good ristoffel at Aneka Rose on Warmoestraat. For pancakes, try Pannenkoeken house on Grimburgwahl. we missed it this time as they are now only open on sat and sun. As I remember, they are definitely worth a visit.

        1. Below is a link to reviews I wrote back in April, after a business trip to Amsterdam. We, too, really enjoyed De Witte Uyl. Both of the other places I wrote about are easily accessible by tram and both were what I'd call exceptional. They are all about the same price range, too.

I can't wait to go back. Almost forgot to recommend the new cafe at the new main library. It's very nice for lunch and comes with wonderful views of the harbour. It's next door to the Centraal station.

            1. Envy is exceptional, with small dishes varying from salmon tartare to pork belly, its not far from Leidsplein. This is more nouveau style. A style now very popular in New York City.
Vermeer is good they have a Michelin star, if that means anything.
FEBO by central station, has great croquetten. The pancake places north of the station that have Dutch only menus I found to be the best.

I really appreciate all the great suggestions. We leave for Amsterdam tomorrow night.

We had a lovely meal last night at Mappa, which is a Northern Italian restaurant near the south end of Nes. I hadn't read anything about it on Chowhound, but we noticed that it was packed with locals the night before and decided to try it.

All the food was excellent, but the best starter was a wonderful goat cheese and figs dish. For the main course, I had an absolutely luscious veal ravioli with tomato, spinach, and parmesan in brown butter sauce. One dinner companion had another pasta dish, tagliatelli with chicken if I recall correctly. My other two companions had that evening's specials -- a roasted sea bass and a saffron-flavored angler and shellfish dish. We raved about the shellfish dish to our server, and the chef came over to describe how he prepared it.

Service was very friendly, if occasionally a bit slow as the restaurant was quite full.

All in all, I would highly recommend Mappa!
