Cheese shop in Encino

Bob Brooks Oct 28, 2008 04:15 PM

A while back, I encountered a cheesemonger at a farmer's market. She told me that they had a retail shop in Encino that was in the process of being remodeled. I forgot about the place and now I can't seem to find it. Does anyone know of a cheese shop in Encino?

The only cheese shop I know of in Encino, assuming it will be a cheese shop, is one called "The Big Cheese Shop" near the corner of Balboa and Ventura Blvd. I wouldn't get your hopes up though. It's had a "Coming Soon" banner up for god knows how long now. I've seen paper moved around in the window, and one time saw a vacuum sitting lonely in the store amongst vacant deli cases, but as far as an actual human presence I've seen none. I assumed it ran into some money troubles or possibly construction issues.

If you'd like to get more info about "The Big Cheese", go to the Encino Farmer's Market on Sundays and look for the cheese guy. He's the owner of said store and last time I talked to him was back in August I think. At the time he said they were going to open in a month and obviously that hasn't happened. He was having issues with licensing and his business partner. I've seen people in there every once in a while but not much has changed in the interior. The owner did say if you see someone there, knock on the door and they can sell you some cheese.

Let me know if you guys hear anything. I've been waiting patiently!

For the first time today I saw life in the place! If I wasn't driving by and in a rush I would have stopped and gotten more info.

Still I find it funny that the moment this post surfaces and I mention I never see anyone moving inside, ever, I finally did today. Maybe a sign of good things to come?

I have some bad news guys. I went over to the Farmer's Market a couple of weeks ago to buy some burrata from the cheese guy and to get the scoop on the shop. It turns out that the cost of construction to get everything up to code was going to cost him an insane amount of money. So he's now looking for a different location, like a failed yogurt shop, so that whatever he needs is already installed. If you notice, The Big Cheese Shop banner is no longer hanging in the store. I knew it was too good to be true!

Best Cheese Shop in the valley is in Studio City just east of Laurel Cyn on the North side --Artisan Cheese. And while you are there, the duck confit sandwhich is killer!

If you need a great cheese shop truck down the road to Studio City...best cheese shop in the valley: Artisan Cheese. On Ventura just east of Laurel Cyn on the North side -- and if happens to be mid-day while you are there, the duck confit sandwhich is killer! GO! If you love great cheese, you won't be sorry.

I like Artisan Cheese but the Big Cheese would have been much closer to me. I was looking forward to the idea of walking over to my local cheese shop but that's not going to happen anymore :(
