Columbia Mo - what's new, what's good?

Dennis S Oct 28, 2008 10:54 AM

We'll be heading back for a bit more than a week and would like to find what's stated in the subject line.

The last time I really had time to peruse was 18 months ago. I know about something new next to Booche's, and maybe another one over by the Tiger Hotel. What are those two all about, and what else should I put on my list?

You are probably referring to Rome next to Booches and Bleu next to the Tiger Hotel. I had dinner at Rome and wasn't impressed. Large portions, pedestrian food geared toward the dorm crowd. Had lunch at Bleu and was impressed. Very inventive menu. I'll go back to try some of their other choices. It's got buzz so it might be crowded.

If you want a burger, I recommend Billiards on Broadway. There was a similar place with different owners next to Booche's, but they closed a while ago. Some new people reopened on Broadway, between 5th and 6th, across from Tropical Liqueurs, a few months ago. Best burgers in town and they make their fries from fresh potatoes.

I ditto steveb that I haven't heard much good about the Rome, but I have heard good things about Bleu. I haven't gotten around to trying it yet, but I hear that reservations are a good thing at night, especially on a weekend night.

If you haven't tried it, I also recommend the Wine Cellar and Bistro, on Cherry Street. It's a little, cozy place with excellent food and a great wine selection. On the pricey side for Columbia, but great.

For breakfast/lunch, I also recommend Cafe Berlin. I had some great raisin/walnut/bleu cheese pancakes a few weeks ago. Very interesting, but filling. They have some breakfast items that go off the beaten path, and serve a lot of locally farmed products.

Thanks all. I'm here now, and have been for a couple of days. Rome is getting the same reviews from all friends, and looks miserable. Excited for Bleu.

Hit Addison's tonight with a friend and it's still good, though service lacks. They seemed to have re-invented a dish I loved with pork loin now with mashers and jalapenos. I miss the old version.

Trying to hit Carlita's, and the pho place on Bdwy, but will have to work with family schedules. In other news, hit Ernies and Booche's already. Still good.
