Classy & quiet but not stuffy

Here is the trick -- we need a place to celebrate in style because we're taking friends out who are moving out of NY but it needs to be quiet enough to enjoy a conversation among the 6 of us, but not stuffy. That wouldn't do for these friends. We are flexible on types of food and looking to spend around $50pp before drinks, tax, etc. Preferably below 14th Street. Thanks for your help.

We enjoyed an excellent meal at The Orchard (below Houston) about 1 month ago. Nice atmosphere and quiet enough to carry on a conversation. Go for it.

Crispo, Italian on 14th (not below) would fit the bill. I just recomended it on another thread so it must be on my mind. But it is a beautiful open, casual space and great food and wine.

I find Crispo almost uncomfortably loud.

I appreciate the Crispo recommendation -- we went a while ago and liked it a great deal -- but my recollection was the same as chow_girl -- too noisy.
