Tips for Dining, Eating, and Food Shopping in Manhattan

ISO Moderately Priced Casual Dinner - Midtown tomorrow night

Westchester chowhound needs recs for Tues. night (tomorrow!) Getting together with a few friends - all women - and need suggestions. One friend is coming in from LI (Penn Station) and the other from Westchester GCS and I work in Manhattan near Grand Central and to make it easy for all we'd prefer somewhere in the general vicinity of either station or between the two.

Open to all cuisines - most important is very good food, reasonably priced, casual and very comfortable restaurant where we can talk and not be rushed if this is doable.

Thanks!

  1. Since people can differ as to what "reasonably priced" means, it would be helpful if you would provide a per person budget for food.

Keep it under $50 with a glass of wine? Still lower would be better than that.

    2. consider Sosa Borella, an Italian/Argentine place on 8th Ave, near 51st St...mellow...very reasonable prices...

you could also eat in the pub room at Keens but it might go over 50/person depending on what you ordered...the pub room has a slightly less expensive menu (some smaller cuts of meat, a tasty fried-chicken/endive/blue-cheese salad, etc...

another option, but which is a little out of the way for the Penn Station person, is Montparnasse...French bistro on 51st or 52nd, and 2nd Ave...very relaxed atmosphere, tasty wines, and you won't be rushed at all...

      1. You could also consider Koreatown if that would suit the company. Maybe BCD tofu house on 32nd street? They just opened. It's a nice space, more design-y than the other places on the block, and very affordable, though the music was a little annoying when I went. But they were very happy to change it when we mentioned that to the waitress.

        1. Cibo is on the corner of 2nd Av. & 41st St. In addition to the a la carte menu, they offer a 3-course dinner prix-fixe for $35. We haven't been there in a very long time, so I can't comment personally on the current quality of the food, but I have not read any complaints. The ambiance is lovely, and they have never rushed us.

          1. Thanks all but any thoughts on "cool" places albeit not too loud. East 30s or West 40's???

            Thanks again.

Try Casaville or Public House (get the cookie dough smash for dessert) on the East side or Etcetera Etcetera on the West. Or the Crooked Knife is somewhat in between.
