I would definitely recommend Atlas Bistro. Not only is it BYOB, but they are also next door to the (supposedly) the largest wine store in the valley, so you could also pick out a bottle then have it with dinner. It is on the pricier side, but the food is amazing. Its on Scottsdale rd, just south of thomas, so not technically tempe, but literally 5 minutes away from ASU main campus. (a hint for tempe first timers: Rural Rd and Scottsdale Rd are the same street, it just changes name when it crosses city lines.. many have gotten confused with that before).

Thanks, I will have to try it. Of course, the reason I'm looking for a good BYOB is that I'm going to be meeting one of my wine geek friends at the conference and we will both be bringing something special from our cellars.

That should work nicely. While I usually reserve my cellar for really special meals, I do not think there will be a problem with personal BYOW at Atlas.

My last BYOW was a Taylor '48 for my wife's birthday.

Enjoy,

We have dined there on several occasions, and have been impressed on each.

I'm less of a BYOW sorta' guy in general, but their setup is ideal. If one cannot find a couple of great bottles at AZ Wines, they are not trying. I'd look at the Atlas Bistro menu, before hitting the racks at AZ Wines. When we last dined, the glassware was quite good. They "get it."

BYOB is rare in the Phoenix Metro Area. See this thread for an explanation:

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/567147

As mentioned above, Atlas is probably the closest option in southern Scottsdale.

A little farther but not out of reach, there is Coupe de Tartes, the Breadfruit, and Hana -- all in Central Phoenix with BYOB permits.

Thanks folks. I looked at the thread on BYO in AZ. As bad as that law is, where I live in Montgomery County MD, it is worse. No BYOB allowed, and the county is the only legal wholesaler, meaning that all wine served in restaurants must be purchased thru them. That wouldn't be so bad except they are incompetent, and having a monopoly, jack up wholesale prices about 35%.

DC on the other hand, has a fairly interesting BYO law. It is permitted only if the establishment HAS an alcohol license. Then it is up to the discretion of the restaurant. Needless to say, many people like me who want to take a bottle out of their cellar to have with a great meal, head to DC.

Thank all of you who recommended Atlas. Four of us had dinner there Tuesday night and enjoyed it greatly. I would also add that the wine store next door is dangerous. We took a couple of bottles with us (a 2005 Dain American Beauty PN and a 2001 Karl Lawrence Napa Cab) and purchased a bottle at the store. However, after seeing how good the selection was (we would kill to be able to get some of the stuff they had on the shelf at retail here in DC) two of us ended up buying a case and having it shipped home to Virginia.

I would also add that the fois gras dessert I had was one of the best I've ever eaten. Wonderful meal, great wine, and a great time. We were there for over three hours and the folks at the restaurant treated us very well.
