Recs for steak house like Del Frisco's, but less expensive

  • 6

Hi everyone. I'm looking for recommendations for a steakhouse like Del Frisco's (in terms of scene and quality), but a bit less expensive. Ideally, I'm looking for mid- or uptown locations, although I'll happy hear all Manhattan suggestions. Also, it doesn't have to be an official steakhouse. An American or Italian restaurant that serves a good steak would be great as well. Finally, decent portion sizes are a must. Thanks in advance.

    1. FYI - not sure if you know but Del Friso's offers a 3 course prefix (you have to request to see the menu) for $39.95 between 5 and 6pm or all day on Sunday. It is a really great deal as it includes a salad, choice of 8oz filet mignon or salmon with mashed potatoes and broccoli and dessert.

Wow, I didnt know about that deal! Looks great! I will definitely have to try it. An 8 oz. filet there definitely does the trick. Although this recommendation request is for a Saturday night dinner, so it unfortunately won't work out this time.

      2. This question has been asked a million different times. All of the top steakhouses are relatively the same price. Upper $30's to $40's for just the steak. Some notable exceptions would be getting the hanger steak at BLT prime or Primehouse, both are cheaper and excellent quality for the price. French bistros or maybe argentinan places are going to be the only thing cheaper but definitely a different caliber of steak. Can't help you with anything uptown though.

        1. Hi there, although I'm from the UK the last few times we visited NYC we had a great steak at Angelo & Maxies.

It's a nice bar with great strong cocktails, the steak was excellent and the sides were to die for - especially the onion strings and creamed spinach. Portions were huge too. I have a vague recollection the steak was less than $30 or around that mark.

It's reasonably close to union Square - think it is around Park & 19th or 20th.

We're heading back to NYC again in December and we plan to have our steak dinner there again, but if you don't go to A&M I'll be interested to hear where you go in case it's somewhere we might try instead!

I wouldn't compare it to Del Frisco's, but Ottomanelli in the east 90's is certainly an Italian restaurant that serves a very good and inexpensive steak.
