Absolute bakery & cafe (parliament)

This place has been open for just over a month now. Basically it's a bakery that sells conventional pastries (croissants, danishes), cookies, breads, some artisanal cheeses, tarts (pecan, pumpkin, apple), and some south sri lankan shorteats (spicy pastries, starters).

I've been stopping by every few days to try a variety of things on the menu. I've tried the danishes and croissants (they're great and fresh), but the real reason I've been visiting so often is to try Raj's (owner) Sri lankan treats.

Here are the short eats I've tried so far.

- meat rolls
Deep fried dough that is stuffed with chunky pieces of fried mutton/chicken/beef, chilies, onions, potatoes, and some other vegetables. Medium spice.

- Fish rolls
Same, but with cooked bits of fish instead. Not as spicy.

Rolls are often referred to as chinese rolls..

- Meat roti
A paper thin roti (lanji roti, thinner than parathas), stuffed with a meat and veg puree and then folded.

- Fish bun
Bun stuffed with fish and spices.

Most of this is a $1 each or less.

Bakery opens every day at 8am, and by 9am, most of the sri lankan stuff is practically sold out. The food is definitely worth a visit. This is a place looking out for when you're tired of the traditional 'sit down, curry' and want some spicy snacks.

90% of what you see is made in house, daily.

589 Parliament
South of Wellesley, on the east side, before the gas station.

More sri lankan treats can be found at Yarl's market just up the street on the same side.
This place has fantastic cutlets, patties, rolls, and Vaippan (fried dough ball with bananas), and Kollukatais (sweet dumplings)

  1. These are the same people that owned Montreal Style Bakery a couple of doors north of their new location. I love their stuff, but will not eat there again until they learn how to purchase hand washing supplies.
