LV Quickies: Mon Ami Gabi, Galerias, N9NE, Big Sur Oyster Bar

So, here's where we ate during the rest of our anniversary weekend:
Friday lunch: the patio at Mon Ami Gabi (Paris). We've eaten at Mon Ami Gabi a lot of times for lunch, but this was the first time that we sat on the patio. Usually it's too hot, too cold, or too busy. We didn't want to eat a big lunch because we were meeting janetofreno for an early dinner at Galerias. So, the chopped salad with chicken for me, the open faced shrimp sandwich for my husband. My only quibble with the chopped salad is that they pre-mix it so it's impossible to have them leave out any undesired ingredients. In my case, that's celery. I like the salad (which is substantial, yet not heavy) enough to overlook and/or pick around the celery. My husband enjoyed the shrimp, though I think it was too heavily dressed. Anyway, it was another pleasant meal at Mon Ami Gabi. The weather was perfect.
Friday dinner: Galerias (1780 N. Buffalo). We'd tried to have lunch there with janetofreno on our last trip, but the restaurant was closed that day due to a problem with the fryer which resulted in the gas being shut off. That day, we were given a "buy one, get one free" coupon by the owner, so we rescheduled for dinner with Janet and her DH but unfortunately DH had to be out of town on business. Margaritas were nicely done, not too sweet, lots of different versions offered. We started with guacamole which came with 3 little chicken taquitos, each cut in half. The guac itself was creamy and fresh-tasting, perfect with the green salsa that's served with the chips. Then, Janet and I each had the chiles en nogada, and my husband had a chicken tamale and a pork tamale. I mentioned on another thread that my husband said the tamales were some of the best he's ever tasted and I'm sure he's tasted lots. As to the chiles en nogada, they were nicely done but didn't match up to the ones made by Chef Roberto at Babita here in L.A. (offered seasonally only at Babita). The version at Galerias had a larger ratio of sweet to savory ingredients, and they used dried cherries, I think, instead of pomegranate seeds although I'd seen pomegranates at the markets in L.A. for at least a couple of weeks before going to Vegas. The frijoles that come with the meals were quite tasty, with a meaty component, I'd guess bacon. The bill for the three of us was $80 including tip and one margarita each, though one of the dinners was free. I'd definitely return.

Sunday dinner: N9NE (Palms). N9NE has long been one of our favorite steakhouses in Vegas. It's sceney, but the food is good. We've settled into a routine: each get a salad or appetizer, share the bone-in ribeye (the 24-oz. version on the regular menu, not the monster "for two" version that's often on the specials), get a couple of sides, maybe dessert. Sunday night, my salad was heirloom tomatoes with avocado, serrano chiles, Maytag blue cheese and an aged balsamic. It was perhaps the nicest salad I've ever had at N9NE. The presentation was beautiful. I was sad that the tomatoes might be the last heirlooms I will eat until next summer. My husband had the wedge salad, one of his favorites. Our ribeye was cooked perfectly medium-rare. Our sides were the irrestible gnocchi with creamy white truffle sauce, and asparagus (which isn't ever on the menu but they always have it). Too full for dessert. Once again N9NE delivered a solid meal. $160 including two cocktails and tip.
Monday lunch: Big Sur Oyster Bar (South Pointe). Ok, Dave Feldman recommended this place a couple of times, but specifically for the seafood wrap. Since we'd decided to do our final bout of cards at the South Pointe, before driving home to L.A., it seemed like an opportune time to check it out. This seafood wrap is really a fish burrito, but it's pretty good. Lots of fresh salmon and a little halibut, cubed and sauteed, dressed like a fish taco with salsa, a mayonnaisey sauce, and cabbage, all wrapped in an herb-flecked tortilla (I detected the aroma of rosemary in the tortilla). Sided by house-made potato chips. Pretty tasty, albeit a bit spendy at $18 per wrap. Ah well, it's Vegas, money in Vegas isn't the same as money anywhere else.
$18 dollars? Yikes, they've raised the price then, substantially, since August -- that's more than they charged for the lobster grilled cheese when i was there. Yes, it's basically a grilled fish taco on steroids, in an herbed flour tortilla. Really enjoyed your report, especially the Bar Charlie report.
