Sonoma - Orange pumpkin-shaped princess cake at Scandia Bakery
Seems like every bakery in Sonoma has some sort of cake in the shape of a pumpkin. Scandia dyed the marzipan orange, added a green stem ... voila ... or whatever Scandinavians say... pumpkin princess cake.
Under the orange marzipan it is exactly the same as the regular princess cake, only different decorations and colors.
They also had some really pretty Halloween-themed cookies - pumpkins, autumn leaves, ghosts, etc. The prices are reasonable too though the exact price escapes me. I think the small thin orange pumpkin cookie was 50 cents. The largest cookie was $1.25. It was a tasty shortbread cookie with good and not overly sweet icing. Very festive to have with a coffee or tea break.
There is also a good-looking pumpkin cheese cake that I have on my to try list on the next visit.
I have been stopping in over the past few weeks for a cookie or two. They are nice Danish butter cookies (40 cents each), The cookies with raspberry fillings are particularily good. Another cookie I liked is called an ice cream cookie that comes in pleasant pastel colors, pink, green and yellow, IIRC.
The iced tea is spiced with cardamon and cloves, I think. They have a soup of the day and a half dozen cold sandwiches I haven't tried those yet. Also haven't tried any of the Danish yet. They have a number of types of cake slices and prices are reasonable.
It is an old fashioned bakery with tables and a pleasant enough place to take a little break.
The pricess cake is good though not as light as some. The icing is a thicker than most and has a strong almond flavor. Under the icing is a not too thick layer of whipped cream, a thin layer of custard, about an inch of cake, thin layer of raspberry jam on top of a thin cake bottom. The rapsberry jam, as mentioned, is particularily good.
The slice is generous. Here's Melanie's 2005 report about the cake. Surprisngly the price hasn't risen. Still $2.75. I didn't find the marzipan grainy though.
