1st Time Visitor..

I'll be coming to Chicago for the first time on Friday and looking for cheap eats.

I'm attending the Chicago Int. Film Festival -- most theatres are near Upper Michigan Ave. -- and staying in the theatre district on Randolph btw La Salle St. and Franklin St.

If anyone can recommend great local and cheap places to eat, I'd greatly appreciate it. Of course, I'd like to try the famous Chicago pizza and hot dogs.

I believe most of the film showings are at the two AMC theaters, one in River East at 322 E. Illinois St., and the other on the "Mag Mile" at 600 N. Michigan Ave.

For the double-crust "stuffed" type of Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, Giordano's has a location just down the street from your hotel, at 310 W. Washington Street. Near the North Michigan Avenue theaters is their location at 730 N. Rush Street. It's my favorite pizza! www.giordanos.com

For the single-crust "pan" pizza type, Lou Malnati's has a location just a few blocks north of your hotel, at 439 North Wells Street. www.loumalnatis.com If you're at the North Michigan Avenue theater, a close by location for this type of pizza is the original Uno's and Due, both at Ohio and Wabash. www.unos.com

At all of the restaurants offering Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, you can call ahead with your pizza order to avoid waiting 30-45 minutes while seated for your pizza to bake.

Here are two inexpensive non-pizza recommendations in the vicinity of the North Michigan Avenue theaters. Quartino offers "small plates" of Italian specialties. www.quartinochicago.com And Cafe Iberico serves tapas. www.cafeiberico.com

I can't think of any of our great pizza places super close to the River East theaters. However, here are a couple of other inexpensive suggestions in that area.

One block east of the theaters is Fox & Obel, our premier gourmet grocery store. In the rear of the store is a cafe where they serve full meals as well as light snacks, all day long, 6 a.m. to midnight. "Cheap eats" at its finest! You can view the cafe menu on their website at www.fox-obel.com

A few blocks west of the theater, at 164 East Grand Avenue, is Boston Blackie's, which offers excellent burgers and "pub fare". www.bostonblackies.com
