Al Pastor @ Taqueria Las Fuentes, Greenfield

Melanie Wong Oct 22, 2008 07:40 PM

After our visit to ALBA farms south of Salinas, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/563963 , my mom and I kept heading southward on 101 to Greenfield. We checked out the Saturday farmers market, http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/535697 . Then we had lunch at Taqueria Las Fuentes, my first opportunity to see if the spinning al pastor could be as delicious as it looked a few months ago.

Tacos are $1.50 each, and I was very happy when the tortilla press was pulled up onto the top of the counter to go into action. A made with made-to-order, tender, single ply tortilla, griddled without oil, is the base of each taco. We each ordered a pair. Mom picked lengua and cabeza for her carnes, http://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/2932254219 , and I had to have the al pastor and a lengua with everything (cilantro, onion, salsa), http://www.flickr.com/photos/melaniewong/2932254227 .

When I saw my plate, I asked for some piña with my al pastor taco. While there was none on the spit, the gracious taquera said she’d try. Soon a couple spoonfuls of diced fresh pineapple were presented to me.

The al pastor pork had some carmelized crunchy edges, the advantage of cooking on a spit. The buttery lengua and intensely beefy cabeza were great too. All were quite greaseless. In combination with the light as a feather tortillas and very fresh garnishes, these proved that healthy tacos can be absolutely delicious as well as good for you.

This post on King City http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/834473 reminded me that I have a report about Taqueria Las Fuentes.

I didn't get to go, but based on this thread, I recommended Taqueria Las Fuentes to two friends a few weeks ago, since they were driving through. They tried the tacos al pastor and they loved them.

Definitely still a worthy stop on the route between SF and LA.
