They had a short run as a board favorite; but seemed to slip quickly. I had a few very good meals and 1 or 2 frustrating meals.

Hey Taralli! Like your name. I spent a week last summer trying to find finocchio taralli. I was seriously on a mission. I went to 5 or 6 different Italian bakeries and specialty shops in Cambridge, Somerville, and the North End, but no luck. Then I ran into a street fair in NE and a vendor had homemade ones, but I didn't have any cash on me, and the only ATM I could find was out of it, too.

Finally, a friend sent them to me from New York. So, if you are an expert taralli finder, let me know, esp if they aren't like $6 a bag.

I saw a few varieties(fennel seed, cracked pepper, etc.) strung like garlands & hanging from the rafters at an old bakery in East Boston on one of my exploratory trips a few years ago. Think the bakery was on a hill with an old brick-lined oven in back - maybe Eagle Hill area. Perhaps Fredi or some other folks might have more info. I chose "Taralli" because my grandmo often made the fennel tarals(as she called them).

If you liked that, get thee to Fuloon for more. It's a little addictive.

Totally agree ... I've eaten in Flushing too and Fuloon holds up very well.

The bang bang chicken was Ma La to the max one time I went, less so the next. When it's on, it's ON.

I'm sure if you mentioned to the awesome hostess that ma la is what you seek, they will bring it.

If that's the one with the red pepper all over it, I tried but couldn't manage that dish. Much prefer the heady perfume of the szechuan peppercorn with the buzz and the numbing but not the extreme pain. But then I don't do Hell night either.

Another dish I can't do is the chili pork at Floating Rock for the same reason. Different chilis, same pain.

Great news about the beef leek burrito -- for the uninitiated, it's Taiwanese-style flatbread (similar to a tortilla but thicker) rolled around beef and leeks in a delicious brown sauce. Not gloppy. Mulan serves two in an order and cuts them each into pieces. It's a great appetizer to share.
