  1. Hmmm I wonder if this is the same D'Parma's that used to be in North End..anyone know? I remember enjoying it as a very simple, basic red sauce joint...

It is indeed the same one. I've been to the one in Winthrop a number of times--used to like it a lot more a few years ago, but the last couple of times it has been just average.

I hear that Alia (same block) is preferred by many of the locals....

Hiddenboston, you beat me to it. As, I was reading I was thinking about Alia and was going to suggest it. Best to call ahead about the hours though. I found Alia to rival anything in the North End. Could not have been happier with my meals there.

As a local, I should disagree. While admittedly D'Parma's quality has been inconsistent recently (due, I believe, to their opening a new location in Maverick Square) it is still consistently better than Alia's. My experiences at Alia have been of overcooked pasta, bland sauce, and higher prices than D'Parma.

Not that different from D'Parma quality wise, but rarely mentioned here, is Rossettis on Winthrop Beach. Like D'Parma, a pretty standard menu, but they have a grill, so a few different options.

      2. They are a part of my regular rotation. They are old school Italian and nothing on the menu is over $20. They also have excellent swordfish options as well as some excellent pasta, chicken, and veal options. One of my favs is swordfish putenesca. It's BYO with a minimal corking fee of $3. If your party is large, I recommend a reservation. Another of my favs in Winthrop is Alia, Italian/Morrocan on the other side of the same street.

After reading about D'Parma's on these boards, we finally made it for the first (and last )time about a year ago. Not impressed in the least and wouldn't go again. Friends who were regulars and fans agree that it's not what it apparently used to be.
