Sandwiches near Javitts Center

Any good sandwich spots within ten blocks or so of the Javitts Center or close to Penn Station?

  1. I really like the Braised Rib sandwich at Starwich on 42nd between 10th and 11th

That braised shortrib at Starwich is excellent but about the only sandwich there worth getting there.

Regarding the Javits Center, if Sandwich Planet still exists (on 9th Ave a block or two south of Port Authority) that's probably your best bet. You might also try Manganaro's Hero Boy and Groceria, which are further south on 9th Ave. I prefer Hero Boy, but neither is truly spectacular. I also like Atomic Wings in the area.

Closer to Penn Station, one of the best Italian cold cut combos in Mahnattan can be found at Salumeria Belliese (28th and 8th). I also love the shawafel at Pick-A-Pita (39th btw 8th and 9th) and the falafel on Laffa at Olympic Pita (38th btw 5th and 6th).

    2. The best sandwiches in the neighborhood are from Daisy May's BBQ at 46th and 11th.

Daisy May's is excellent but a bit of a schlep from the Javits Center.

Depends on which exit you use. ;-) It does fall within the "ten blocks or so" parameter the OP mentioned, and I have friends who show at the Javits Center twice a year who think it's definitely worth the schlep.

ETA: It occurs to me that Daisy May's might well deliver to the Javits Center. I know quite a few places do. It's certainly worth a call.

Agreed -- well worth the schlep if time and energy permit.
