Cookie Cutter Cookies other than Sugar Cookies

Don't get me wrong, I love sugar cookies, but just got a ton of new Halloween cookie cutters and want to make cookies other than sugar cookies. Any suggestions?

  1. These are from COOKIE CRITTERS, by Debora Pearson....paraphrased of course.

    Lemon Flavored
    1/2 c butter
    3/4 c white sugar
    1 egg
1 tsp lemon extract (vanilla works too)
    2 tsps grated lemon peel
    1 1/2 c flour
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1/4 tsp salt

    Sugar and Spice Cookies

    1/2 c butter
    1/3 c brown sugar
    1 egg
    1 T molasses
    1 1/2 c flour
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    1 t ground ginger
    1 t cinnamon
    1/2 tsp ground cloves
    1/4 tsp salt

    1/2 c butter
    1/4 c white sugar
    1 egg
    1/4 c liquid honey
    3 T milk
    1 c whole wheat flour
    1 c flour
    1 t baking powder
    1/2 tsp salt
    1 t cinnamon

    Cooking temp 350degrees.

Directions are similar for all recipes.
Cream butter and sugar together. Add other wet ingredients. Combined dry ingredients in a separate bowl and add dry gradually to wet. Form a ball and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes. Roll, cut, and bake as usual.

    1. Gingerbread cookies are great any time of year (but especially in fall and winter) and in any size or shape. I like this Gourmet recipe, which makes a very easy-to-roll, forgiving dough. You can roll it thinner or thicker, depending on whether you prefer crisp or cakey cookies (the comments have good info on that).

I have also had good luck with this recipe. Gingerbread cookies would be especially good for bats or black cats. :-)

        1. Just saw a promo for Halloween week on FoodNetwork, and in the background were bat-shaped tortilla chips in various colors. Not cookies but could multitask those cutters! Serve with soup, chili, dips.
