first trip to NYC

My boyfriend and I will be visiting from Texas next month for 4 days. Neither of us has been to NYC before. To save money we are staying with a friend in NJ and going to explore the city during the days. ONE night (a Sunday), we are staying in the city to see a show and have dinner. I am having dreams of Jean Georges or Le Bernadin for our one nice meal (ha!). Fortunately for my bank account, most place like this are closed on Sunday evening.

We just want to have a nice romantic meal after the show (which should get out around 6). The type of food doesn't matter... I just like things that are interesting and creative. Would like to stay under $150ish for the both of us, including a glass or two of wine (I drink, he doesn't). I know this puts us in the "cheap eats" category by Manhattan standards. We don't have to stay in the theater district, and not really sure if we should or not. I really am totally clueless. Any suggestions would be wonderful.

  1. If you could do your fancy/romantic meal for lunch there would be more options at the $75 a head range. I believe the prix fixe lunch at Le Bernadine is $64. Is that a possibility for you and the bf?

    1. You might try Telepan, it's not the fanciest restaurant, but very good food and good atmosphere. Also, it has a $64 4-course tasting menu, which ought just about fit your budget. It's on w 69th, street, and is indeed open on Sundays.

Thanks for the suggestion, KT. Though, I really would prefer dinner so we can leave more time for "museum-ing" during the day.

kiler, Telepan looks like a great suggestion. The menu looks unusual (in a good way). I was also thinking about the tasting menu at Blue Hill or possibly Babbo. I know that will put me a bit out of our price range, but hey, you only live once right? Any thoughts on either of these?

      2. I love Telepan as well. Bar Balud is a possibility. Have been to Telepan many times and Bar Balud once. Had very good food at the latter but the service was lacking that night.

        1. i recommend going to 6pm or so you can get a table in the bar area or possibly the main dining room...absolutely delicious food and easily doable for 150 since you aren't drinking too much...

          1. Dovetail (creative New American) has a Sunday Suppa deal that would keep you under your limit.
